Points of Interest

Map of Day 2: Rome

Today your tasty trip around Rome begins in earnest. Tuck into our tasting tour of Rome, where you’ll spend three and a half hours wandering through the city’s most famous foodie neighbourhoods, led by a local food connoisseur. You’ll stop at markets, delis, restaurants and gelaterie to sample Roman specialities, and your guide will teach you about the city’s culinary history and share a few secrets on the best places to eat in the city.

If it’s a weekend, you could choose to join the farmers market food tour instead. An authentic experiences for foodies, you’ll be guided through one of Rome’s local markets to suss out the best organic produce the city has to offer, including seasonal fruit and veg, freshly baked bread and Italy’s signature olive oil. There will be plenty of opportunities for sampling, as well as learning about the local fare and the best way to prepare ingredients.

Both tours are a few hours long, so you’ll have plenty of time before or after (depending which tour you go for) to hit the sightseeing trail. Head to the Vatican to explore the cavernous Basilica di San Pietro, or discover the smaller (but still beautiful) churches dotted around the centro storico – some of our favourites include the basilicas of Sant’Andrea della Valle and Santa Maria sopra Minerva.

Perhaps Italy’s best-loved dessert, tiramisu tasting is a must-do when in Rome. But since this is a cooking break, we’re taking it one step further – you get to make it. This hour-long class guides you through the art of making tiramisu under the guidance of a profession pastry chef, in small groups of two to six. Once you’ve created your masterpiece, you’ll taste the fruits of you labour and receive an authentic recipe to take home with you.

Save some room, because this evening you’ll get stuck into another Italian classic – pizza. Our 90-minute class takes place in a little restaurant close to the Trevi Fountain, where you’ll get hands-on with the help of an expert chef. You’ll knead the dough, ‘dress’ your pizza (authentic toppings only, per favore) and load it into the wood-fired oven. Then, you’ll get to sit down with a glass of wine and a little bruschetta to taste the result.

Your tiramisu class doesn’t start until 2pm, so in the morning, make tracks for Ancient Rome. Start off exploring the temples and arches of the Roman Forum, before stepping inside the imposing 1st-century Colosseum.

Come mid-afternoon it’s time to tick off two pillars of Italian cuisine – gelato and espresso. This guided walking tour will take you off the beaten track in Rome, to find the coffee shops and gelaterie that locals love. You’ll spend two and a half hours sipping coffee and sampling gelato flavours, rounding off the experience with a visit to the city’s most famous tiramisu shop for dessert.
