The Vatican and The Sistine Chapel

Rome’s landscape is instantly recognisable by the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica, and no visit to the Eternal City would be complete without spending some time at the Vatican, the world’s smallest independent state.

Rome attracted major artists to work for the papal patrons, and the Vatican’s museums were founded by Pope Julius II in the early 16th century. They contain some of the world’s greatest art pieces – most notably Michelangelo’s frescoes on the Sistine Chapel ceiling. The museums cover over 5.5 hectares and showcase about seven kilometres worth of exhibits.

Vatican Museum Opening Times: Monday to Saturday 9am – 6pm. Sunday 9am – 2pm (closed during religious holidays/festivities).

Price: €16 per adult.

St. Peter’s Basilica Opening Hours: April to September, 7am – 7pm. October to March, 7am – 6pm. The Dome is open from April to September, 8am – 6pm and October to March, 8am – 5pm.

Price: €7 per adult including lift to roof level (please note there are still steps to climb to reach the top of the dome) or €5 per adult without the lift.
