The birthplace of St. Francis, Assisi is a tiny town with a big reputation. A treasure trove of art and architecture half-hidden in Umbria’s countryside, your full-day tour helps uncover the history in Assisi’s atmospheric cobbled streets.
The tour begins bright and early with transport through the scenic Umbrian hills to Assisi. Here, you’ll tick off three of the town’s architectural gems, starting with the Basilica di San Francesco. A professional guide will help you explore one of Italy’s most beautiful churches, with its grand cathedral, little chapel and the crypt of St. Francis himself.
Your guide will then take you on to the 12th-century Basilica di Santa Chiara and Santa Maria degli Angeli, both entwined in the town’s history with key parts in St. Francis’ Franciscan movement. There will be plenty of time to sample Umbrian classics, with a break for lunch in an authentic Italian restaurant, and a fair few photo opportunities before you board your return transport.
We say: “This is a great way to explore Assisi’s architecture and history. It’s one of Italy’s most famous historic towns, so there’s lots to see, and a guided tour can help you get to grips with it all.” Laura Mason, Product Manager
