Fly from the UK to Pisa Airport where you’ll pick up your hire car for the trip. Take the winding country lanes on your journey towards the walled town of San Gimignano, about an hour and a half’s drive away from Pisa. On approach, you’ll spot its medieval towers - all 14 of them - rising out of the hilltop, then check into your hotel for the night.

Once all the day trippers have left, explore this UNESCO-protected ‘town of fine towers’ as the locals come out for their aperitivo. Enjoy a stroll arm in arm around Porta San Giovanni and the Piazza del Duomo, stopping for a glass of the region’s white wine, Vernaccia di San Gimignano, and a candlelit dinner.

For the next two nights you’ll be based in Siena, spending your days driving out into the open countryside. The famous Chianti wine region is right on your doorstep and allows you to drop in on rustic, family owned wine estates for a tour of the wine cellars and a tasting on the terrace overlooking the vines.

Pretty medieval villages and hamlets dot the hills, which make a perfect stop for a bite to eat – make sure you stock up on cheese, cured meats, honey and olive oil from the local farm shops you see on the way. With the freedom of your own car, enjoy taking the roads that pique your interest, stopping anywhere you like for a photo and travelling at your own pace.

Day 5: Siena - Florence

Your final destination will be Florence, which is known as the cradle of Renaissance. The drive to the region’s capital takes about an hour and a half and takes you through the heart of the Tuscan countryside.

On arrival, drop off your bags at the hotel and set off on a walk to get your bearings. It won’t take too long – the city is neatly compact, with cobbled backstreet lanes leading you to trattorias, and all the main sights within easy reach. Once the heat of the day has died down, stroll along the Arno River as the sun sets over the terracotta rooftops and domes, and take in the romance of the iconic Ponte Vecchio.

Day 6: Florence

Wake up to church bells ringing through the streets of Florence and head out early to beat the crowds. Your first stop should be the Duomo cathedral and Brunelleschi’s cupola, which rises above the city. Climb up Giotto’s campanile for a stunning panoramic view over the rooftops, or head up the dome for a closer look of the frescoes.

Book tickets in advance to skip the queues into the Uffizi Gallery, and if you’re still in the mood for sightseeing, there’s the Palazzo Vecchio or the Pitti Palace just across the river. Florentine cuisine is also legendary – save room for a bistecca alla fiorentina, a T-bone steak cooked over the coals that’s perfect for two people.

On your final day, drive from Florence to Pisa where you’ll have enough time before your flight to see the famous Leaning Tower, dating back to the 14th Century. The marble façade of the medieval cathedral is just as picturesque.

Then drive to the airport, drop off your hire car and fly back to the UK.
