- 10 minute walk to Taormina's historic centre and cable car
- All rooms have stunning sea views
Set in the hillside just below Taormina's town centre, the Grand Hotel Miramare looks out over the sea and the lovely bay of Mazzarò Beach.
The hotel is only a ten-minute walk from Taormina's historic town centre and the cable car that runs down to the coast below. Built in 1922, this patrician villa of the Lo Turco family was transformed in 1926 into the hotel that stands there today. Bedrooms are somewhat dated and incorporate the hotel's historic features, however they do enjoy fabulous sea views and the hotel’s dining room faces a large terrace overlooking the Messina Straight.
The swimming pool and tennis court are located at the bottom of hotel's terraced gardens that extend down 187 steps (there's no lift available) and command marvellous views, guests can also spend their days relaxing here whilst the poolside bar serves light meals and refreshments.
The Grand Hotel Miramare is only 400 metres away from the centre of Taormina and a short walk from the funicular and the impressive 3rd century BC Greek Theatre, which was later rebuilt by the Romans.
The hotel has 68 rooms (official rating 4 star). Child prices apply to ages 2-12 years. Minimum stay 3 nights.

About the location
Holidays in Taormina marry history and culture to form an unforgettable experience in Italy. It’s perched at the top of Monte Tauro in the foothills of Mount Etna on Sicily’s Eastern coastline, between the cities of Catania and Messina. This ancient town offers visitors a view into the past with a number of elegantly preserved historic treasures, from the grand Greek-Roman Theatre to the equally impressive Palazzo Corvaja, which are just waiting to be discovered.
You don’t have to be a history buff to make the most of everything Taormina has to offer. Alongside the historical sights there are plenty of other attractions to take in. The main street, Corso Umberto, is traffic free and home to an array of shops and restaurants to rival any in the bigger cities.
There are also plenty of seaside activities to dive into thanks to the town’s coastal setting. Adventurous travellers can try watersports like wind surfing and snorkelling, while relaxing scenic boat tours around the gorgeous capes and grottos of the Ionian Sea allow you to explore at your own pace. Alternatively, simply spend long tranquil days on sun soaked shingle beaches.
Transfer time
The hotel is 1 hour from Catania airport. Return private transfers included. To change your transfers or book car hire instead, simply call us once you’ve completed your booking.

One of the quietest hotels I've stayed in, but also one of the smallest shower cubicles I've ever seen...
Arrived late and the welcome/check-in was friendly, efficient and fast. Straight to my room, unpacked and into bed. Single bed in a single room on the main floor with a small balcony overlooking the bay. Reasonable size room, very comfortable and clean, but as I said, absolutely tiny shower cubicle, I'm only 1m68 (5ft6) and not the widest person and I was bashing elbows and having to be careful...
Breakfast next morning on the terrace and WHAT A VIEW! Breakfast buffet has all you need, fresh fruit, joghurt selection cold meats and cheeses, scrambled eggs, sausages and bacon and a large choice of pastries and bread. Also fruit juice and Prosecco and you can order coffee or help yourself from a big samovar if you want "Americano".
Hotel does not offer evening meals but the pool bar seemed popular and good and it's less then 10 minutes walk up the hill to the old town centre with a huge range of restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets. I made a point of eating a large breakfast then looking forward to a decent meal in a different place each evening.
The hotel is slowly renovating and the first areas done are reception (bright, cheerful, welcoming) and the pool...the rest of the hotel does need modernising, the rooms are clean and comfortable but feel a little old and a bit tired. Not a real criticism, just an observation.
The pool has been wholly refurbished and is absolutely heavenly! Not huge but with wide shallow steps leading into the main pool, never more than waste-deep, and simply lovely. I swam upwards of 1000 metres every day and loved it. It's only open 10am to 6pm so I was disappointed not to have a pre-breakfast dip but then found 10-4 was perfect as the sun disappears behind the hotel by then anyway. Also, the steps up/down, all 189 of them, will keep anyone fit!
All in all, a good hotel, with potential to be really fantastic with the location and what they have done so far. Staff were really friendly and helpful, even with my terrible Italian. I enjoyed my stay and would come again, but probably book a double room for extra space.

What a wonderful hotel in Taormina! The views are absolutely spectacular. Rooms are spacious and comfortable.
Salvatore and Francesca at the front desk were kind and accomodating. Location is excellent. Does require a taxi or Uber to get into town if you are not in favor of the 10 minute (uphill) walk. Breakfast is good with many choices, but earlier is better. There is no evening dining at the hotel, but with so many restaurant options, this was not an issue at all. Lunch is available at the pool snack bar. There is a fantastic little terrace restaurant at the end of the street where you can find lunch, dinner, gelato or a cocktail.
Did we mention the views??!!! Breathtaking.

Avoid at all costs! This is not a 4 star hotel and by no means is it Grand. I arrived here to be met by arrogant, unmotivated, reception staff sitting almost hidden behind a raised counter behind reception desk. No porter to help with luggage so we had to haul it up ourselves. The foyer has been upgraded but beyond that the entire hotel is dated and old. The room allocated was vile, dated, grotty, no sockets but overloaded ones with several plugs all in one. We had to unplug lamps to plug our phones in. Horrible smell. Worst of all there was black mould in the bathroom. A build up particularly around the bath which was just covered with silicone. Hairs in areas! It turned my stomach. We requested an immediate room change and it was getting late and I was with my son. We were taken to an equally grotty room, top floor same problems just bigger with balcony with no outside light and extremely high up. An excess supplement was going to be charged to us of €500 for this awful room. The only good part was the view. We had to go into Taormina having travelled all day to get food. Breakfast next morning was utterly horrible with small boxes of cereal suitable only for a campsite and tinned fruit. Greasy cold bacon, sloppy eggs, watered down juices and poor coffee. There was hardly anything there in fact and no freshly cooked options we would expect in a 4 star accommodation. The staff were abrasive and rude and totally unhelpful. We saw maybe 4 other people there sitting at tables with dirty cloths which had been left out overnight we found out. Next we discovered there was NO pool as advertised. Construction workers with diggers were at the pool area which was out of bounds. We have photos. The hotel has no restaurant, no tennis courts, no bar so we had no services basically and we had paid high costs in advance for our stay. Manager was dismissive and rude when confronted re the lack of any services. He only laughed into my face! Furthermore we discovered more construction work beside our upgraded room. Drilling occurring and workmen passing our room. We were absolutely appalled. Corridors showed mould and evidence of damage probably from leaks. We contacted our travel operator to get us out as a matter of urgency. Do not go here it is a place that needs to be closed and undergo a complete upgrade/refurbishment. After couple nights of suffering we managed to exit to our relief from this place. They are luring people into it through completely false advertising in their website! It is scandalous. Avoid avoid avoid. Dreadful place.

This hotel is definitely not grand as it states in its name. The entrance into the hotel has been redesigned and modern ,but the rooms definitely need an upgrade. The staff were unfriendly and unhelpful, but the cleaner was lovely.I had booked a room with a balcony only to find that the is was a Juliette balcony that I could not sit out on. When I asked for a room that I had booked they said it would be €250 extra. The pool was out of order and when I asked if there was another hotel’s pool I was told to use the sea. To get to the sea you have to use the cable car which cost €10 per day, get on the bus or walk down the steps which takes 50minutes. I’ve stayed in 4 star hotels lots of times but this is definitely not a 4star establishment.

Had a quiet and relaxing stay here.
The rooms are large, with comfortable beds and an ample sized balcony to sit on for morning coffee.
Fantastic views of Isola Bella and the coastline towards Forza D’Agro.
A short walk to the bus terminal for taking excursions.
A couple of good restaurants nearby if you don’t want to walk into town.
The town is about 15 minutes of slow walking away, and is full of restaurants, shops and historical buildings and churches.
Easy walk to the huge greek theatre.
The only need for the nearby cable car is if you want to go down to the beaches, otherwise this is not needed to get up into the town.
We had a very warm welcome by Salvatori, who has looked after us with passion and warmth.
The breakfasts are good (a lot to choose from) with a choice of sitting in the dining room or outside.
Rooms have aircon if needed, but you can sometimes hear your neighbours if they have loud voices.
