About the location
If you want to explore another side of Italy, there is no doubt that holidays to Tropea will guide you off the beaten track. The charming historic town is perched on top of a cliff that towers above the mesmerising blue and turquoise waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea and is part of the wider region of Calabria, in Southern Italy.
Famed for the quality of its sweet tasting red onions, cipolla di Tropea or Tropea’s onion has become synonymous throughout Italy when referring to all red onions. However, there is so much more to the small town. Tropea overlooks Stromboli, a small island that inhibits one of three active volcanoes in Italy and while the volcano has been active for more than 2,000 years, Tropea itself dates back to medieval times, with traces of civilization dating back to 4,500 BC.
Tropea has borne witness to the rise and fall of the Ancient Greek authority, the Byzantines, Roman Empire, the Normans and more. With a history laced with the thread of Greek mythology, legend has it that Hercules declared Tropea to be one of his ports along the 40km of La Costa degli Dei - The Golden Coast of the Gods.
The town embodies a wonderful combination of majestic natural beauty, fascinating architectural charm and is in close proximity to the mysterious Aeolian Islands, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Great for couples, explorers and adventurers alike, the seaside terrace town of Tropea is a historical and cultural escape just waiting to be explored.

Having read so many good reviews, I was hoping that Hotel Tirreno was going to match up to them but, I must say my expectations were exceeded!
A family run hotel with fantastic staff, headed up by Stefania, who cannot do enough for you - you can really tell that their passion is to give you the very best holiday experience, which they did.
Our room was spacious, comfortable and very clean with a great view. The food both at breakfast and dinner was really good - I especially loved the breakfast which was really varied.
The pool area was very nice - lovely and relaxing and immaculately kept, surrounded by beautiful foliage.
There is a great shuttle bus service to the beach in the day and Tropea in the evening. If however, you need a taxi, as we did because my mother couldn't do either the 100 or 200 steps up to Tropea, they will gladly arrange this for you.
Also, you can book excursions via the Hotel. A group of us wanted to take a boat trip to Capo Vaticano and, because it was the end of the season, their usual contact had finished for the season but, they went out of their way to find us another operator who could take us.
Exceptional service and an exceptional Hotel which I hope to revisit very soon!

Tirreno is a quite small hotel, perfect for relaxing, situatet in a nice and neat garden.
The rooms are in different houses, only 2 floors high. The rooms are tidy and have a good space, each have a terace or balcony with chairs, where you can sit and enjoy the day. The varieté of food for breakfast and dinner (3 course menu) is good.
The staff is very friendly and helpful , it doesn't matter where (at the reception, the pool (bar), beach, shuttle driver or at dinner).
There#s a shuttle service to Tropea and the beach. The beach is good and also neat. The beach falls off quickly, so it is not the best for children. At least you have a beatuiful view at the sea and to the Stromboli.

Breakfast is spot on, lunch at the pool bar is served efficiently and with a smile, whilst the evening menu is varied and interesting. The pool is lovely, enclosed in really well tended gardens and, even in late September, the water was the perfect temperature for swimming.
The quiet rooms have everything you need and are kept spotlessly clean. We definitely recommend Hotel Tirreno.

Our window and poatio overlooked the Tyrrhenian Sea. Beautiful blue with Stromboli just barely visible in the distance. Everything was great. The room was well designed and organized (although the table for computer was cramped). Spacious and efficient, with lots of storage. The pool looked great but the weather was too cool for a swim.
Breakfasts were magnificent - highly recommended. We also had dinner in the restaurant one evening - excellent.
The staff were very helpful and the shuttle to Tropea was fantastic. It allowed us to spend the evening in the old town without having to worry about driving and parking.

We stayed at the hotel in September for a week. The staff were wonderful - polite, courteous and helpful. The grounds of the hotel are immaculate with all sorts of vegetation - cacti, olive trees and various blooming flora. The breakfasts were A-1, lots to choose from. Lunch at pool bar was great as well as the pool itself. Dinners too were excellent. The room we had was in the main building and it was clean, decent size and good sized balcony with a view of the sea - just what we had asked for.
There was shuttle service to the beach during the day and one into Tropea in the evening.
