Italy’s regional food festivals are the best way to try local specialties. Sagra della 'nduja, a local festival celebrating the region’s famous spicy sausage, is held in August in the town of Spilinga, a half-hour drive from Tropea. Fans of all things spicy can visit the seaside town of Diamante in early September for the Pepperoncino Festival, celebrating Calabria’s much-loved chilli.
