The Aeolian Islands are a stunning volcanic archipelago located in the Tyrrhenian Sea, just north of Sicily. They’re known for their natural beauty, rich history, and unique geological features.
The seven islands each have their own identity and feel and include Lipari, Vulcano, Salina, Stromboli, Filicudi, Alicudi and Panarea. In addition to these seven inhabited islands, there are several smaller, uninhabited islands and rocky cliffs, such as Basiluzzo, Strombolicchio, Dattilo and Lisca Bianca.
Known for their volcanic activity, the Aeolian Islands are home to some active volcanoes. There are two on the archipelago: Stromboli and Vulcano, offering visitors a fantastic opportunity to get up close with nature. The “Lighthouse of the Mediterranean”, Stromboli, is one of the most active in Europe getting its nickname from the eruptions that light up the sky at night.
On the other hand, Vulcano is dormant and has been since 1890. The volcanic mud left behind is popular with visitors for its therapeutic properties. Take a hike and explore the volcanoes, where you’ll be rewarded with spectacular sea views.
