Tenuta di Canonica is a former medieval lookout tower that has been transformed into a charming country hotel in the heart of Umbria. Sitting less than four miles from the town of Todi and close to the border of Tuscany, Tenuta di Canonica is the perfect launchpad for discovering the artistic culture of central Italy. Tenuta di Canonica has the grace of craftsmanship shining through the property, with locally baked terracotta floors and vaulted ceilings.
There’s even a medieval springwater well located within the property. Some of the ancient Roman walls and foundations have been sympathetically showcased amid contemporary steel staircases and plush, welcoming furnishings. There are plenty of places to relax during your stay at Tenuta di Canonica, including a small library on the first floor, and a grand lounge on the ground floor that features an antique billiard table, grand piano, and a large stone fireplace where a crackling, welcoming fire is lit during cooler months. By day, the hotel can arrange gourmet Umbrian wine tastings, wellness experiences, golf, Vespa tours, and delightful al fresco cooking experiences.
When you’re not exploring local bounties, you can find refuge in the garden, where an open-air lounge of an Indian Mandip provides cushions for lazing as you enjoy pretty faraway views of Lago di Corbara. During your holiday in Todi you will find that it is steeped in delightful mythology: the town’s origin story is that an eagle stole a picnic blanket and dropped it strategically on the hilltop. Truth be told, Todi was founded by the Tutere, ancient people who settled here in the 8th-7th century BC. Todi is a historic snapshot in time, with its snaking streets, tiny alleyways, soft-stone houses, and ancient Roman and Etruscan walls. The townspeople continue to celebrate its origin myth choosing its emblem to be an eagle with unfurled wings, clutching a piece of cloth in its talon. You will find symbolic eagles sculpted or bronze-casted on the town’s most important monuments, including the church of Santa Maria della Consolazione, and the 14th century Palazzo dei Priori.
As you amble around, you’ll be sure to unearth Todi’s centre, Piazza del Popolo, and arguably Umbria’s prettiest square. This delightful town boasts uninterrupted scenic views of rolling hills, olive groves, sunflower fields, and verdant farmland, looking down over the protected Tiber River Park, where wildflowers bloom.
