Milan’s opera house is perhaps one of the most famous opera houses in the world, and is certainly one of the most beautiful. For opera lovers, it’s a must-do on your Milan itinerary. The audience of almost 2,000 spectators are seated in plush chairs and velvet-rich boxes, guided to their seats by white-gloved ushers with a real sense of occasion. The acoustics in the theatre are said to be perfect and most of Italy’s greatest operatic artists have performed here over its history.
The opera season traditionally starts on 7th December each year on St. Ambrose’s Day.
Those interested in the theatre’s turbulent history and Italy’s fascinating operatic past can visit La Scala’s museum. It houses paintings and musical instruments dedicated to Italian composers and portraits of famous Italian maestros, such as Giuseppe Verdi and Arturo Toscanini. You can also see the auditorium from the boxes (except when rehearsals or performances are in place).
