Piazza Navona is perhaps Rome’s most beautiful open space: an extraordinary boat-shaped piazza bedecked with fountains and surrounded by a vast array of impressive baroque palazzos. At the centre of this dramatic space stands one of Rome’s most beloved fountains – The Fountain of the Four Rivers – and an Egyptian obelisk which towers above it.

Measuring hundreds of feet in length, the piazza is today known as Rome’s showcase square, and is often popular among energetic street performers and persuasive market traders, each vying for your attention. Be sure to visit the square’s most impressive edifice – the Church of Saint Agnese in Agone – which features a dome decorated with some of the most stunning frescoes found in the city.
