At Citalia we have 95 years’ experience and over this time we have discovered a number of Italian hidden gems that are off the beaten track. We have travelled the country top to bottom, bottom to top, and everything in between to bring you our extensive knowledge and secret treasures.

Without further ado, introducing the latest in our Hidden Italy series, Citalia’s Choice for January…VERONA!

Set in the north of Italy, Verona is a city rich in culture. Thanks to its architecture and history, Verona has been granted UNESCO World Heritage status. Here are some of our favourite things about Verona for you to enjoy on your next Italian adventure.

Arena di Verona Opera Festival

A night at the opera is one of life’s greatest pleasures and even more so when it is in Verona. 2023 will see the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Arena di Verona Opera Festival, an event not to be missed! Taking place in the summer, the event is held at the prestigious Arena di Verona, a 1st century Roman amphitheatre bursting with history. Enjoy iconic performances like Verdi’s Aida or La Traviata.

Juliet’s House

Casa di Giulietta, Juliet’s House, is arguably one of the most famous spots in all of Verona. Inspired by the story of Romeo and Juliet, the balcony is where Juliet called out to her lover. “O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo”. The house once belonged to the Cappello family and dates back to the 13th century. The balcony overlooks a courtyard where a statue of Juliet stands tall. Visitors from all over the world gather here to write letters to Juliet to ask for guidance in love.

Climb Torre dei Lamberti

Torre dei Lamberti stands proud overlooking Piazza delle Erbe. Sporting incredible views across the city of Verona, a trip to the top is well worth it. Be amazed at how flat the city is as you look out at new heights. Head back down to Piazza delle Erbe and grab a bite to eat, this vibrant square is home to lots of restaurants and bars and even a small market on certain days. Soak up the atmosphere and watch the world go by in this bustling spot.

Veronetta District

Take a stroll along the banks of the River Adige and cross over into the quirky Veronetta District. This area has always been a little different from the rest of the city and the name translates as “Little Verona”. Today, Veronetta is one of the most vibrant and quirky areas in all of Verona. It’s home to hip bars and restaurants inspired by bohemian style as well as artisan studios and galleries. Take a wander through the streets and see what you can find.

Holidays along the Tuscany Coast take you beyond the beautiful gently undulating, tree spiked countryside that is characteristic of this enchanting part of Italy.

As well as the peaceful, artist inspired countryside, there’s a wonderful contrasting coastline to experience. The Tuscany Coast boasts many kilometres of enticing sandy beaches, perfect for those who just want to relax and enjoy the sun, as well as charming restaurants and bars for an early evening Tuscan Negroni aperitif.

Tuscany is renowned for its cuisine; from comforting winter soups made with different types of cabbage and beans, to Panzanella, a popular salad made with bread and lardo di colonnata, which is pork lard cured on local marble.

The Tuscan Coastline offers everything from sunbed and umbrella striped private beaches to free beaches with intimate coves boasting calm, clear blue water. Everything’s on offer here; the peace and tranquillity of beaches surrounded by pine forests and sand dunes or fishing harbours offering bars and restaurants to suit all tastes along. Adventurous travellers will love the water and wind sports which can be enjoyed off the coast.

Explore Tuscany Coast like no other

With 95 years of expertise in providing holidays on Tuscany’s Coast, there are plenty of hidden treasures we can introduce you to. Tuscany’s sandy beaches stretch for many kilometres and for those who like some privacy, a top tip is to seek out single cars parked along the road. You’re likely to find a subsequent steep trail which leads down to a quiet stretch of beach.

The Versilia resorts along the northern coastline favour the archetypal Italian beach, with rows of sun loungers, umbrellas and coast guards on hand. Travelling further south there are pine woods and extensive sand dunes to enjoy in the Migliarino San Rossore nature reserve just east of Pisa. To add variety to your holiday, a trip to the multicultural sea port of Livorno offers the opportunity to hire a bike or a Segway and travel along the Terrazza Mascagni, the black and white chequered waterfront terrace favoured as a meeting place for locals. If you start your ride at the right time of day you can enjoy the panoramic sunset views.

Castel San Pietro and Giardino Giusti

If you want a more tranquil place to relax and enjoy nature after all the walking through the charming but packed streets of Verona, Giardino Giusti is a beautiful green oasis. Located in the east of Verona it is surrounded by a magnificent sixteenth century palazzo and is considered to be one of the finest examples of an authentic Italian garden. Just before sunset, head to Castel San Pietro to watch the sun go down as the sky changes between shades of orange, red and pink.
