Lake Trasimeno

Lake Trasimeno is the fourth-largest lake in Italy at 128 square kilometres; only slightly smaller than Lake Como. Situated on the border of Umbria and Tuscany, it's surrounded by sunflower fields, vineyards and olives groves; along with the main lakeside towns of Castiglione, Magione, Passignano and Tuoro. Three islands lie within the lake; the largest Isola Polvese, followed by Isola Maggiore (the only inhabited island with a population of around 30) and Isola Minore.

Visitors to the lake can swim in the fish-filled waters, relax on the beaches, or for the more active use the cycle path that borders the lake. There are also ferries to the island of Maggiore, which once hosted Saint Francis of Assisi in 1211, from both Passignano and Castiglione. The tiny island which still retains the feel of a 15th-century fishing village is home to the 12th-century church of Saint Michael found at the top of the hill, and the Romanesque church of Saint Salvatore.
