About the location
One of Tuscany’s most prominent spa towns, Montecatini Terme is an intoxicating blend of historic architecture, beautiful scenery and some great local attractions. The area has been inhabited as far back as 10,000 BC, thanks mainly to the impressive natural spa located in the town. Today, however, the town mostly dates from the medieval period, and offers plenty of historic sites for you to explore.
Like many of the towns in the region, this one is split between a lower and upper section, known as Montecatini Bassa (lower) and Montecatini Alto (upper). One of the best ways to go between the two sections is via the town’s historic funicular railway, which has been running since 1888. The upper town is most historic, with pretty cobbled lanes, stunning views and a 12th-century church. The town’s spas are also located here, and are some of the best known in all of Tuscany. While spa treatments have modernised, there are many original spas still standing, including the grand Tettuccio Terme – one of the region’s best.
Montecatini Terme is just over 40 minutes’ drive from Pisa and Florence, so you’ve got plenty of day trip options during your stay here.
Transfer time
Car hire is recommended for this hotel. Montecatini is 31 miles from Florence and 32 miles from Pisa. Simply call us once you’ve completed your booking and we will talk you through the options.

We stayed in the Grand Hotel Francia as part of a tour, so I cannot attest to the cost of the rooms. But, we were very happy with our room that had a windowed balcony door with somewhat of a view, including that of the pool. (It also had a view of a dilapidated pool as well as another building in disrepair, but we chose not to look that direction.) The door also had black out blinds if one chose to limit light.
A mirrored closet was next to the balcony door that was large enough to hold our suitcases, and there were drawers for clothes, etc, in the one side. A small safe was in side, but it was not very large. An ipad might have fit, but not anything larger. There was a television, but we never turned it on. Also, a relatively large desk beneath the TV if one needed to work, but we were on vacation.
The bathroom was quite large, and had a toilet as well as a bidet, with a very large walk in shower. Towels were large. No washcloths, but there were large linen towels for hand use. Shampoo/body wash was in a dispenser in the shower. A hair dryer was included with an outlet in the bathroom for use.
A small fridge stood next to one of the beds, tucked into a cabinet used as a bedside table.
Others complained about the AC, but we had no issue. We also had no problem opening the balcony door to enjoy the cool night air.
The wi-fi worked great.
Breakfast was included and was plentiful. Ffruit, yogurt and cereals, as well as hot food choices and pastries were just some of the choices. . The coffee was only brewed. No cappuccino to enjoy. There was daily freshening of the beds and bathroom.
There were two elevators for use to the upper floors, and a large central staircase if you chose not to use the elevator. Also, a delightful outside terrace to just sit and enjoy the ambiance.
The hotel features some beautiful meeting rooms as well as a very large restaurant on the bottom floor. As mentioned, there was a small pool, although we did not use it. One of the other guests on tour did enjoy using it without any issue.
I'd say that the rooms were quiet, as for most of the week, we did not have any issues with noise. However, on our last day, when it was obvious a new tour group had arrived, it was obvious that the walls are not that protected from noise, as we could hear conversations as if people were in the room with us. I suppose it is the luck of the draw and the consideration of the fellow traveler that will determine a peaceful stay.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Grand Hotel Francia. It is within easy walk of the Funicular to the top of the mountain, as well local restaurants.
On the day of our departure, we needed to leave at 3:45 AM. The hotel staff had set up a small breakfast, including croissants, juices and coffees for us prior to our leaving. I found that to be quite surprising, and very much appreciated. Certainly a first for us in our travels!

We had a fantastic seven night stay at this hotel as part of the Bocelli experience. The staff were very helpful and polite as you would expect but also very considerate in making our stay a brilliant experience. The air conditioned bedrooms are very clean and the foyer has a large seating area. Thank you and best wishes to all who work there.

If ever I have the good fortune to be back in Montecatini Termé, I will ensure that I will stay at F&Q.
It is a most elegant and comfortable hotel, close to the Centre of the town and the rail station.
The staff are wonderful. The reception staff are for ever smiling, they are knowledgable and most helpful. The breakfast restaurant staff are so cheerful and greet all their guests with a musical “ Buongiorno” that reminds you that it was worth getting out of your very comfortable bed and coming down to breakfast.
Your orders at the bar are always added to your room tab, but be ready to quote your room number in Italian….. the gentleman barkeeper takes great delight in getting you to say it, but he will reward you with a super grin.
One of the highlights for me at F&Q, was coming back shattered from Andrea Bocelli’s 30th Anniversary Concert at three o’clock in the morning to find a beautiful bowl of fresh fruit waiting for me in my room, the assumption being the the Hotel staff did not expect any of us to get down to breakfast before it closed at 10 am.
To everyone at Francia & Quirinale thank for making MY stay perfect….

We have just returned from an enjoyable week’s stay.
From our point of view, there were a few negative issues.
The website promises a most friendly hotel and we will be hugged. On arrival there was no welcome …we were promptly asked for our passports which were copied and returned with our key, told where breakfast was served and directed to the lift.
We duly unpacked and went back to reception and asked for a drink. We were told this was not possible as the bar was closed until 4…..this was early afternoon. We were directed down the road to a cafe/bar, so we went there in the torrential rain. Incidentally, we went here a few times and were always greeted with a smile.
There is no pool bar as shown on the website so no drinks round the pool till after 4pm, unusual for a 4 star hotel. Notices in reception inform that it is forbidden to drink shop bought drinks on the premises.
We were on a B&B basis and breakfast was fine although the hot food buffet was the same all week as was the evening menu.
The breakfast staff were very friendly and helpful but unfortunately no niceties on checkout, just presented with the bill.
There is a lack of outside space, just a terrace at the front overlooking the road and the pool area is small with a few sunbeds.
We have stayed in other 4 star hotels in Italy which have far superior facilities.
However, the hotel is in a great location near the train station for visiting Florence and Lucca and a trip up the Funicular railway is a must.

The website is not accurate, there is no Pool bar, facilities locally which are detailed have been closed for over a year and the hotel is aware but have choose not updated the website, parking ‘lot’ is a small three car garage, many businesses in Montecatini Terme are closed, all bike hire station have been removed. The menu is limited and does not change so if you want to eat in the hotel it will be very repetitive. Room was good but shutters do not close properly.
