About the location
One of Tuscany’s most prominent spa towns, Montecatini Terme is an intoxicating blend of historic architecture, beautiful scenery and some great local attractions. The area has been inhabited as far back as 10,000 BC, thanks mainly to the impressive natural spa located in the town. Today, however, the town mostly dates from the medieval period, and offers plenty of historic sites for you to explore.
Like many of the towns in the region, this one is split between a lower and upper section, known as Montecatini Bassa (lower) and Montecatini Alto (upper). One of the best ways to go between the two sections is via the town’s historic funicular railway, which has been running since 1888. The upper town is most historic, with pretty cobbled lanes, stunning views and a 12th-century church. The town’s spas are also located here, and are some of the best known in all of Tuscany. While spa treatments have modernised, there are many original spas still standing, including the grand Tettuccio Terme – one of the region’s best.
Montecatini Terme is just over 40 minutes’ drive from Pisa and Florence, so you’ve got plenty of day trip options during your stay here.

We were upgraded to a suite. Nice to have a separate area to sit after a day out in the 40+ degree heat. Our room was comfortable and clean.
Enjoyed breakfast but choice quite limited.
We were some of the few guests that seemed to use swimming pool which although small it was always easy to get sunloungers and pool itself was very welcoming in the heat.
Centre of town not far away and plenty of restaurants to choose from. A trip to Montecatini Alto is highly recommended. Very difficult to get taxi back from funicular station however but ticket man at the station didn???t give up trying for us, for which we were very grateful as my husband with a recent leg injury would not have been able to walk.

Located in a quiet part of town and yet only a few minute's walk to the center, this hotel has always exceeded our expectations over the many years we have used it for both pleasure and business. As tour guides and travel organizers we have experienced a lot of hotels over the past 30-some years but Grand Hotel Francia e Quirinale stands out on many levels, from the warm welcome at reception, to the cleanliness of the rooms and premises, from the spacious bar and lounge area to the traditional Tuscan food served at the restaurant. Of the 6 hotels we have used in Montecatini Terme to accomodate our small groups of American travelers over the years, this hotel remains, by far, unparalleled. Among many other friendly staff members, thank you to Martina and Fabio at reception, Roberto at the bar and Giuseppe the restaurant maestro!

Stayed here for three nights whilst visiting Florence and Pisa as part of a Travelsphere tour. We only had breakfast in the hotel but there was a decent choice of food. The staff were nice particularly the barman who was amusing and tried to teach us bits of Italian. We had evening meals at other close by restaurants in the town. Our room was overlooking the terrace roadside seating area and the street but we never heard any noise whatsover when sleeping at night. It is only 15 minutes walk through the local park to the lower funicular station that takes you to Montecatini Alto and abot 6-7 minutes into the town centre.

We enjoyed a recent two weeks stay in Montecatini and loved this hotel! Fantastic location for the railway and bus stations and also the funicular railway up to Montecatini Alto and wandering around the beautiful park. The food for breakfast and evening meals were all excellent and the staff at Francia Quirnale are all wonderful, particularly Doreen , Guiseppe and the restaurant staff and the cheery barman, Roberto. The beautiful lounge area was perfect for relaxing before or after dinner and the pool area was always clean and well maintained.
Our room faced the busy road at the front but we were not disturbed by the regular coming and goings of tourist coaches. Our bed was super comfy but we did have two slight niggles about the room. There was only one chair on the balcony and also no hooks , eg on the back of the door , to hang damp towel after a shower. But this is truly a fabulous hotel where guests are made to feel so welcome and relaxed, making for a wonderful holiday!
