About the location
Holidays to Viareggio are perfect for those looking to combine a beach holiday with a cultural adventure. Golden beaches meet Art Déco architecture in one of the best known Tuscan beach resorts. Touring the surrounding areas, you’ll come face to face with
Pisa, home of the famous leaning tower, and the medieval town of
Lucca, where you can immerse yourself in Italian history.
Viareggio was once the go to destination for
Italy’s rich and famous. The composer Puccini lived here in the early 1900s and the villa he built now houses a museum dedicated to his life and music. Nowadays, Viareggio attracts a wide range of holidaymakers. As dusk approaches, many tourists join the locals on their passeggiata, or evening walk along the seafront promenade. Here, families and friends come together and socialise, sometimes sharing a glass of wine or a gelato along the way.

I was concerned when I first saw my room, as it was incredibly old fashioned looking, and filled with a variety of old furniture of the sort my grandmother favoured. The whole hotel is decorated that way in fact, from the lobby to the dining room, the corridors and the lifts. It's all very tired, at first glance, and I much prefer more modern decor. But I ended up being very comfortable here and it was excellent value for money given the great location on the seafront in the centre of town.
The staff were wonderfully friendly and patient (in excellent English) getting me a matress topper after a bad night on a very hard bed and working hard to try and get us a dinner reservation on a Saturday night. And my room had excellent aircon and a very nicely modernised bathroom, with excellent water pressure in the shower. Breakfast was good too, and the rooftop bar has amazing views and serves lovely cocktails - just remember to book if you want a front row spot to enjoy the sunset from.

We stayed at the hotel for two weeks and really enjoyed it. Initially the room allocated was very dark and we discussed this with the hotel Manager Eduardo who explained that the day we arrived was a national holiday and all rooms were full. The next day he moved us to a better much lighter room and gave a tour of the rooftop bar. Throughout his handling of the issue was excellent. The breakfast is one of the best that we have experienced in hotels and the waiting staff were always very helpful with nothing being too much trouble. The location of the hotel is very good in the centre of the city and close to the beach. The train station is only 15 minutes walk from the hotel and during our stay visited Lucca, Pisa, Florence and Cinqe Terre that are all very easy to travel to.

The question is asked should we have come away on holiday?
The answer is yes of course, but we were a little apprehensive with the Covid situation. The hotel is excellent and we were really looked after by the staff who are lovely, warm and friendly. The breakfast is wonderful with a really nice choice and the staff made our mornings really pleasurable.
The cleaning staff kept our room spotlessly clean and were lovely too and can't do enough to help.
The evening meals were also very good with plenty of choice. Marco our waiter was very accommodating to our dietary requirements..
It is pleasant walking up the main strip with plenty of eating places and bars.
Regards to the restrictions in place for Covid, these are very well adhered to with temperature spot checks on the station and plenty of hand sanitiser available.
We actually felt safer and more comfortable than in the UK.
The railway station is about a 15 minutes walk from the hotel and the service is excellent with very reasonable ticket prices ???13-00 return to Lucca and a little more to Pisa for the two of us.
Lucca is a must visit. A walled medieval town loaded with character and history.
A big thank you to all of the staff and management of the hotel for keeping us safe and helping us have a really relaxing stay. The roof terrace is the perfect hideaway for a tan!
