Boboli Gardens

Situated moments from the city centre, the Boboli Gardens are Florence’s most important pleasure park, developed over hundreds of years and funded by the immense gold reserves of the Medici family. Set behind the spectacular Palazzo Pitti, the gardens flow down more than 110 acres of prime Florence hillside in a pretty cascade of tree-lined alleyways, statued passages and dramatic lagoons. The impressive number of statues and monuments scattered throughout have given cause for the gardens to often be considered Florence’s greatest outdoor museum.

The design was truly remarkable for the era, with the wide panoramas of the city and numerous lengthy gravel pathways creating an effect not yet witnessed in a formal garden. Today, many of the greatest features remain, including a haunting 16th-century grotto, the grand rococo Kaffeehaus, and the acclaimed Fountain of Neptune which was built to rival the statue standing in the city’s Piazza della Signoria.
