About the location
An Aeolian Island adrift from Sicily’s northern shore, mysterious Vulcano is an island well worth unpicking. A favourite of visitors looking for the unexplored, Vulcano’s beautiful volcanic landscape means fantastic hiking, black-sand beaches and natural mud springs. It’s quickly earning its spot on Italy’s ‘volcano trail’; you can reach its peak, Fossa di Vulcano, in around three hours. Vulcano Porto, the main town, is filled with a handful of restaurants and shops, but it’s really Vulcano’s remoteness that is the basis of its appeal – and mystery. It’s not hard to see why the island crops up in Greek myth; according to legend, the Romans named the island after the god Vulcan, believing the smoking volcano to be the chimney of his workshop.

Before writing this review, I offer a bit of context. My wife and I are in our late 50s and early 60s respectively and generally have one ‘big holiday’ a year. While we always go ‘high end’ we work hard to afford it and still look for value for money (so, for example, we still believe that ‘tips’ need to be earned but we tend to be generous when they are!). We have always booked through Scott-Dunn who always come up with a special trip that includes some amazing accommodation. We tend to have 10 days or so sightseeing followed by 4 or 5 days relaxation but this year, due to Covid, we did Sicily and Vulcano at the last minute.
The hotel is excellent and in a lovely location – perfect for watching the sunsets! Given we are quite late in the season it was not busy so no trouble staying Covid compliant! The Island is quite small – probably about 15 miles from end to end with 2 dormant volcanic craters. The first is a good climb (if you are quite fit) with some stunning views of the Island and its neighbours from the top. We also hired a small jeep for one day – given that the vendor could speak very little English we have no idea what the insurance situation was! The jeep was quite expensive (70 Euro) and not in a great state of repair so think carefully before hiring – a quad bike is probably a better bet as they all looked quite new. If you have 3 or 4 days you can walk to most locations and the scenery is worth the visit.
The hotel room was not the top of the range but was very comfortable, roomy and with great views over the pool (which was freezing in late September!) and surrounding gardens. Everything is tidy, well cared for and functional. The only minor criticism is the cost – everything on the Island is expensive so no big surprise but eating in the hotel is pricey – the Hotel has a Michelin Star restaurant which you must try but expect to pay around £400 for 2 with a wine package to compliment the 13 course taster menu! That said, as you would expect, the food is incredible, both to look at and to eat!
All of the staff at the Hotel are simply lovely – they can’t do enough to help and are very conscious of the Covid issue so you feel entirely safe and well looked after. Overall, while things are expensive, Vulcano is well worth the visit – it’s a short ferry journey from Sicilly and sits in a chain of small volcanic islands – until we came we didn’t even know it existed!

From the start to the finish, this trip was absolutely what we needed.
The location - perfect!
The staff were AMAZING! nothing was too much, and they were extremely kind, welcoming, and did their best to make sure we had a great trip.
The reception staff, AWESOME!!
Maria from the Spa, every spa should have a Maria, she was excellent!
Pool restaurant manager (glasses, brown hair) really really lovely!
Food was great, the room was great, the service second to none.
We had to leave two days early due to the incoming storm, but everyone went out of their way to ensure we managed to get back to the mainland, we were extremely sad to leave.
5- star service all the way even in difficult times such as Covid, this is not an easy moment for hotels or staff, and I think we as guests should recognise, how hard they are all working to ensure we have a great trip.
They cannot control the weather, the virus, or the restrictions in place by the laws, but they managed it all with a smile and they deserved to be recognised for this by all the guests, a thank you goes a long way.
Thank you to everyone who made this a perfect trip

Like many, after this difficult year we needed to get away knowing that we had a guaranteed luxury, relaxing experience - there was only one choice. Perfect idyllic get-away, stunning location, great staff and delicious food. Our sea-view room had a hot tub and the most amazing views across to Lipari. My wife and I agreed that this is a place to keep coming back to for a few days each year. OK so the journey via Palermo takes a couple of hours and then the hydrofoil, but all part of the experience! Therasia is a 10/10 favourite for sure.

Visiting the island of Vulcano is a must every year and the Therasia Resort is always part of the plan. Coming back this year I have done: 1) spa, 2) Russuri terrace and restaurant, 3) Cappero restaurant.
At the Spa, Maria fixed in two sessions a severe contraction of the lower limbs coming from too much wakeboarding at sunset during the whole summer - I am not so young any longer unfortunately. At the spa I also bought the most amazing swimming suit and pareo. Graziano at Russuri always gave me the best advices which led me to taste the best pasta of the year: he has been there for many years and “you just need to ask him what to eat and drink: I never regret asking him for advice in the last 3-5 years.
The Cappero restaurant does not need any introduction as it is an international attraction for those of us with a sensibly sofisticate palate. Careful because it is always fully booked and you are lucky if you find a space to sit: the evening becomes magic and the education you gain every time is for a life time. We usually book well in advance to make sure we can have at least one night there: when sitting at Cappero with my wife.... we go back a long way, and I can’t think of any better evening with her - after spending my summer in Lio and Hart in Ibiza - and using Zuma in London as our usual. This is another level of experience: much better, you can’t miss it.
I am sure the consolidation of this service comes with the most experienced direction and I am very grateful to Mr Trani for always being there for us. I read his style as “think big, plan even better and behave simple” type of approach. This is to me a transparent justification as why Therasia is the best I can get: I can touch the sea with a finger stretch, I live the most stunning view in the Mediterranean sea and meanwhile I can also get anything I wish, but without needing to do much to get it: it will just come straight to my hand and from the most experienced and elegant member of staff. At Therasia education and culture lead the way to luxury and heath: I can’t gather any better combination for a magic summer holiday with my wife.

PROS: the grounds are beautiful, pools and sunset views absolutely stunning, the shuttle is very useful. The reception staff were very helpful.
CONS: our room was dark (the garden view room), the service at the bar is ridiculously slow (expect to wait an hour for two drinks), the complimentary mini bar is a nice idea but only includes water and peach juice (why not include something more interesting?!), the food at the main restaurant was average with no real vegan restaurants - at a five star resort with international guests I would expect more modern and interesting food.
