Another prized asset to add to the Sicilian arsenal, is the pretty ancient town of Sperlinga. The name given to this small settlement is derived from the Greek word ‘cavern’ (cave) which is highly appropriate, as until the early 1960s many of Sperlinga’s residents were troglodytes, inhabiting the caves that are carved into the hill. The towns’ congruent charm has its rock castle to thank; exuding character like no other, the castle is an architectural triumph, carved completely out of the rocks its set upon. Slices of history can still be found within the castles grounds, with the prisons, stables and blacksmiths of old, made available for the public to visit. For some more scenic snapshots of the surrounding countryside, climb the 80 steps of the narrow stairway (making sure to look out for the ancient military weapons lining the walkway) and be rewarded with panoramic views from the summit.
