- 5 Minute walk from the village centre of Orta San Giulio
- Panoramic restaurant overlooking beautiful Lake Orta
Hotel San Rocco enjoys a glorious location on the lakefront in the picturesque village of Orta San Giulio, with only a five-minute walk to the pedestrianised Piazza Motta.
A former monastery dating back to the 17th century, Hotel San Rocco is furnished throughout to a high standard with guest rooms tastefully decorated in neutral tones and pastel shades. Caring for the environment the Hotel San Rocco has had an innovative catalytic burner installed, to produce thermal energy production with zero emissions.
One of its highlights is the garden terrace, which leads right down to the shore. San Rocco Terrace is also home to culture and gastronomy events, and for the last three years has housed The Artist in the Villa exhibitions.
During the day, the swimming pool provides a relaxing setting from where you can gaze out onto the lake, or find some shade in the ancient cloisters and surround yourself with over 400 years of history. As the sun sets, order a refreshing drink from the hotel’s Bar Mezzaluna, and sit back with those peaceful views over towards the island of San Giulio. More lake views can be enjoyed whilst dining at the hotel’s restaurant, whose menu has a good reputation. There are a range of sports facilities nearby including golf, riding and waterskiing.
Citalia recommends the lovely Hotel San Rocco for its tranquil position, character and style. It is an inspiring retreat that graces the shores of picturesque Lake Orta. For added freedom and flexibility we recommend car hire.
The hotel has 80 rooms (official rating 4 star). Child prices apply to 2-12 years.

About the location
Orta San Giulio enjoys a privileged location on Lake Orta's most prominent peninsula, moments from Isola San Giulio. Lake Orta is one of the region’s best-kept secrets, so you’ll find Orta San Giulio to be pleasingly calm, despite its beauty. Cluttered around a tiny harbour, the town is made up of just a few streets, packed with colourful fishing houses and backed by the verdant hillside.
Top of the sightseeing list for most visitors is the breathtaking Isola San Giulio – a tiny offshore island decorated with palaces and church buildings. Measuring just 900 feet by 450 feet, this beautiful island is dominated by a 12th-century Romanesque basilica, and can be reached easily by boat.
One of the town’s lesser-known delights is the extraordinary UNESCO-listed Sacro Monte di Orta – a sacred Roman Catholic complex made up of more than 20 chapels. Situated high above the town, this is one of a number of such complexes found throughout the region.

If you visit Lake Orta the best location for a stay is the Hotel San Rocco. Directly on the lake with a swimming pool and views to the island and the hills beyond it is the perfect spot. The problem is the hotel knows that and takes customers for granted.
When we arrived we found the reception staff to be below average for a hotel of this standard. They did not have the suite we booked but gave us a superior room with a good balcony and lake view. I pointed out that this room was less expensive than the one booked but had to argue before getting a 200 Euro reduction.
The room was average in size but the best feature was the large balcony overlooking the lake. The balcony was large enough to have had sun loungers and the hotel should consider providing those.
We didn't use the restaurant as there were other more attractive options available within walking distance including the excellent Restaurant La Motta. Breakfast was served in a crowded room with a low-ceiling and no open window - not ideal from a Covid security perspective. The buffet was extensive but the hot food was of too low a standard for this grade of hotel and there were not enough staff for busy periods. The hotel should move breakfast service onto their beautiful restaurant terrace overlooking the lake.
A very useful feature is the basement car park which is free. Don't be put off by the car parks and no-traffic signs on the way into the village. Keep down the hill and look for the hotel sign. Honk the horn if the gate is shut!

I stayed at the San Rocco hotel for two nights together with my husband after our wedding day. We choose this location because we wanted something special for the occasion so we booked one of their suites. The location was amazing but the staff of the hotel is terrible, where should I begin: when we arrived I was still in my wedding dress and we had quite a lot of bags with us, nobody helps us with our bagguages and we had to walk back and forth in the hotel in order to bring everything in the room, we went several times to the reception to ask questions and every time they asked us a confirmation that we were sleeping in that hotel (in a very cold way). Breakfast is nothing special itself and we had to wait more than 30 min to order a cappuccino, they also forgot to bring bread at our table and they brought that when we were ready with our breakfast. At the end of our little honey moon my dad came to pick us up, this weekend was a gift from him so he came to pay at the reception: the woman at the reception asked twice to my father if we were really clients at the San Rocco and after a long Check in their system they let my father pay. At the bar they didn???t want to make an espresso for him because the bar opens only at 10.00 a.m and he was there at 9.50 a.m. What can I say it???s a pity that those kind of places does not invest in a good service, perhaps they think that a beautiful landscape is enough.

Nice location, right on the lake. Great swimming pool with sun beds and clean towels. The breakfast is extensive with plenty of choice and tasty coffee / tea. We had booked half board and will not choose it next time. There are plenty of restaurants in the area. What we especially remember is the warm welcome during dinner by Massimo. He knows the wine list and recommends the fine wines of his native Piedmont. Makes the meal special again.

Coming here in later September was gorgeous, I imagine this large hotel is quite busy in the Summer months, but in September it was lovely and quiet and we had the pool all to ourselves.
Our room had a gorgeous view over Lago D???Orta and the island, plus we overlooked the remarkable pool on the lake.
There is parking available underground and the staff was friendly. We were lucky to stay here on our anniversary and the hotel surprised us with a lovely bottle of Prosecco and nibbles to help us celebrate. Truly above and beyond and something so special we will remember forever.
We had dinner in their restaurant which was a tasty night filled with beautifully prepared food and fine-dining service.
Well located in the middle of the city, I recommend taking a sunset walk into the main square, grabbing a gelato and watching the sunset with the locals. It was a magical night.

Pros- hotel is well situated in this pedestrian town. Beautiful views and an abundance of outdoor space to sit and marvel at the views. The staff is very helpful and efficient.
Cons- basic rooms are quite small. Our room did not have a closet.
There are many stairs to climb: to the breakfast area , to the reception desk and to the hotels rooms. While there is an elevator it is very small and unusable if you are claustrophobic.
