Just a 10-minute walk from the centre of Stresa on the lovely lakeside promenade lies Hotel Astoria which hails from the mid-1950s, when Italy was enjoying its fabled dolce vita heyday.
The hotel has been owned and run by the same family since its inception almost 70 years ago. This family atmosphere is very apparent as soon as you arrive - you’re greeted like an old friend whether it's your first or fiftieth stay. What’s more, Hotel Astoria has been welcoming Citalia guests for over 35 years, so it is no understatement to say the four star hotel is part of our family too!
Thanks to Hotel Astoria’s central location in Stresa, Lake Maggiore’s attractions are easy to get to. The Borromean Islands are just 20-minutes by boat, and are well worth a visit. All the islands are spectacular in terms of natural beauty, and we guarantee that adding these beauties to your itinerary will be one of your best experiences during your holiday. Simply pick up a ferry from the nearby pier.

Its history dates back to the 15th century when it was a little fishing town owned by the Visconti of Milan. It became property of the Borromeo family - where the eponymous islands get their name from - in the 16th century, cementing its reputation as the go to destination for well-heeled Italian bourgeoisie over the next 200 years. Such was Stresa’s allure that Ernest Hemmingway was a visitor in 1929, setting his novel Farewell to Arms here.
The Borromean Islands are just 20-minutes by ferry from Stresa and Hotel Astoria. Steeped in history, these islands are simply stunning in terms of natural beauty. While Isola Bella and Isola Madre are home to many grandiose palazzi and certainly have wow factor in spades, we admit we have a favourite for the third island, Isola dei Pescatore (Fishermen’s Island). The smallest of the three islands (there are also two islets which make up the full archipelago), Isola dei Pescatore is the only inhabited island. The little island is not only home to the lovely 11th century Church of San Vittore which houses beautiful 16th century frescos and 17th century paintings, but also a number of traditional restaurants. Enjoying an evening meal in one of these, then taking the ferry back to the hotel is a simply unforgettable experience!
One visit to Stresa, peppered with historical buildings, pavement cafés and boutique shops, is all you need for the pretty town to steal your heart.
