About the location
Portovenere is a quaint seaside town in the south of Liguria. Its waterside row of brightly coloured houses has helped to earn it UNESCO World Heritage status, but the town also boasts an impressive hilly backdrop and a petite patch of golden sandy beach.
Take a boat ride out to sea and you’ll see why Portovenere was named after Venus, the goddess of beauty. The town’s tangle of historic streets winds across the hillside in postcard-perfect fashion, crowned on top by the Castle of Portovenere. Dating from the 12th century, this ancient fortress offers some of the most breathtaking views in the region from its hilltop perch.
Portovenere is one of the smallest seaside towns along the Ligurian coast and so offers up just a handful of restaurants to choose from. The beautiful villages of the Cinque Terre are within reach, so you will have plenty to see and do if you fancy getting out and about. If you are feeling particularly energetic, you can hike along the coast to Riomaggiore, the southernmost Cinque Terre village. It’ll take you a good few hours, but you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views – and most likely an ice-cold drink once you arrive in Riomaggiore.
The hotel is 1 hour 20 minutes from Pisa airport, 2 hours from Genoa airport. Return private transfers included. To change your transfers or book car hire instead, simply call us once you’ve completed your booking.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Grand Hotel and the nice little town of Portovenere. It's an excellent place to stay to explore Cinque Terre, though if you would like to watch the sunset over one of the Cinque Terre towns, you are a bit too far away. I certainly would stay here over La Spezia. Do know that the road to La Spezia is a winding road, so if you are planning to take the train from La Spezia make sure to know that it's about a 30 min drive. There is a ferry from Portovenere to most of the Cinque Terre towns, or you can rent a boat to take you there. Be aware that the entrance to the parking garage is just before the hotel, so keep your eyes out for that and know the entrance is very narrow! The hotel itself was very clean and the staff was amazing. It felt like everyone wanted to make your stay a happy one. I would love to come back!

Ideally situated to visit Portovenere and Cinque Terre. Rooms on the seaside are obviously the best with a direct view on the town and the sea . We had one on the back side but had the benefit of a very large terrace . The staff is wonderful and went out of their way to please- a particular note for the restaurant staff who were very professional and attentive to the needs of customers. Each one of them was fantastic - Silvia, for example was a gem ( my apologies to the others whose names I have forgotten).
The terrace of the bar/restaurant is very pleasant - day or night. Rooms are nicely decorated and modern. The reception area however feels a bit cramped and outdated.
We truly enjoyed our stay.
