Things to do in Coast and Islands

The varied coast of Italy has something for everyone, whether it’s a relaxing beach break or cultural exploration you’re looking for.

Experience the Cinque Terre, which is a collection of five of Italy’s most picturesque villages. From the beautiful little harbour of Vernazza with its rainbow coloured houses and boats to the smallest of the Terre, Manarola spilling down to the deep blue seawater from a sheer cliff top, it’s ideal for a day of exploration.

Maiori Beach, the longest beach on the Amalfi Coast is a must to visit. The unbroken sandy beach is complemented by ancient architecture, traditional restaurants and beautiful surroundings making it a wonderful destination for a relaxed day in the sun. In the peak summer months it can get quite busy, so it’s worth getting there earlier if you can.

If its adrenalin fuelled activities you seek, Sardinia is the destination for you. Here you can try surfing, paddle boarding, kayaking and much more. Sailing is also a popular pastime, allowing you to explore the secluded coves and hidden inlets of some of the best stretches of coastline.

Coast and Islands Specialities

Italy’s coast is famous for its seafood dishes. Whether served with pasta, risotto or in a stew the range of delicacies is sure to tingle your taste buds.

A must try in Capri is the stuffed calamari. This dish is served all over Italy but in Capri it is served stuffed with ricotta, parmesan cheese and marjoram and prepared in a tomato sauce. The rich combination of flavours is simply stunning and will have you coming back for more.

For something a little different and authentic to the area, why not try some of the traditional game dishes served on islands such as Ischia and Sardinia? Try a hearty rabbit stew cooked with tomatoes and white wine, originating on the island of Ischia and often served with potatoes and seasonal vegetables. These wild game dishes are often distinctive with strong flavours, perfect when served with traditional Italian breads for mopping up the delicious sauce.

Try torta di ceci from Livorno, the lively port city on the Tuscan coast which is famous for its street food. This thin savoury cake is made from chickpea flour and is crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. Served with a sprinkling of black pepper or as cinque e cinque, a chickpea cake sandwiched into a round soft focaccia or a crispy baguette with added grilled aubergines making a delicious meal.
