  • A traditional hotel with leafy gardens, private swimming pool and terrace

  • Situated in the heart of the historic centre with stunning views

  • Authentic Neapolitan cuisine served in the sea-facing restaurant

Rising out of the rocks of the Sorrentine Peninsula, the Imperial Hotel Tramontano is situated amid lush grounds and is ideally located in the historic centre of bustling Sorrento on the Neapolitan Riviera. The hotel is traditional and the style is that of faded grandeur. It embraces its unique heritage - once a popular stop on the Grand Tours of the 18th and 19th centuries, the hotel has played host to many illustrious writers, including Byron, Shelley and Keats.  And we can see why - the stupendous sea views over the Bay of Naples come complete with Mount Vesuvius in the background.

The hotel’s gardens, designed in 1888, are home to many rare, centuries-old Mediterranean and sub-tropical plants. Picture yourself in the evenings on the hotel’s wonderful bar terrace, an aperitivo in hand, watching a stunning sunset.

Bedrooms are dated and incorporate the hotel's historic features.

The tranquil pool means you don’t ever have to leave the grounds, but if you fancy a dip in the sea, then why not make a splash by taking the lift down to the bathing platform located directly below the hotel ( not owned by the hotel) , entrance is free of charge but sunbeds and umbrellas are payable locally ( in 2022 the charge was  €16 per day for a sunbed €8 per day for an umbrella). The platform also provides easy access to the port and is a great departure point for visiting the rest of this stunning area, including the nearby (and gorgeous) Amalfi coast and island of Capri.

The hotel has 109 rooms (official rating 4 stars). Child prices apply to ages 2-12 ages.

Bars & Restaurants

One of the great things about holidaying in Italy is that you are guaranteed to eat well! Dining at Imperial Hotel Tramontano is a treat for both the eyes and the tastebuds - the hotel’s restaurant Don Alfonso overlooks the Bay of Naples and has one of the best views we’ve ever seen. Treat yourself to some authentic, home-cooked, Italian cuisine as you enjoy watching the twinkling lights of the town come alive below.

Guests can sip a Limoncello in the traditional bar or on the bar terrace overlooking the Bay of Naples , as well as enjoying cocktails and fine Italian wines.

La Terrazza Poolside Snack Bar

Choose from a range of light snacks, including fresh Italian olives and homemade breads, as you take in the tranquil hotel gardens.

The Hotel Imperial Tramontano's elegant lounge offers an ideal place to relax and has direct access to the sea-facing terrace with stunning views.

Restaurant Belvedere

Dine in the locally sourced Restaurant Belvedere, which boasts views of the entire Gulf of Sorrento. The breakfast buffet includes delicate pastries, while lunch consists of a light lunch and delicious seafood dishes. In the evenings, enjoy traditional Neapolitan dishes by candlelight.

About the location

Sorrento is set in the heart of Italy’s Neapolitan Riviera and is one of the loveliest towns on the coast. Palatial hotels nestle comfortably next to typical Campanian restaurants serving gnocchi alla Sorrentina, while busy, buzzy shops line the historic streets. Imperial Hotel Tramontano’s ideal location in the heart of Sorrento means you only have to step outside the grounds to find yourself in the romantic, lemon-scented alleys that thrive with life. Once you’ve enjoyed a spot of shopping - the region’s ceramics are particularly noteworthy - recharge with a latte or limoncello in Piazza Tasso and watch the world go by.

Sorrento is the perfect jumping-off spot for visiting the rest of the Amalfi Coast. An excellent waterbus service will take you to any of the nearby must-see places such as Positano and Capri. Culture vultures will not want to miss a chance to visit Pompeii, just a short 30-minute train (or taxi) ride away. If you’re after more cosmopolitan charms, Naples is just over an hour by road.

The Neapolitan Riviera is famed as one of the world’s most beautiful coastlines, and we wholeheartedly agree!
