Piazza Umberto I

Piazza Uberto I, or the ‘Piazetta’ as locals call it, is Capri’s most perfect space: a petite square with one edge looking out to sea, and the other three backed with lively pavement cafes. The whole bustling affair is watched over by the dazzling face of the town’s iconic clock tower – now used as a muse for many of the island’s watchmakers.

Thanks to the adjacent funicular bringing guests from the port to Capri’s streets, the square is endlessly filled with cosmopolitan crowds exploring the island at leisure, and the well-established cafes around the square’s edge are some of the best places in all of Italy to people watch in style. What’s more, the Piazetta is just a few minutes’ stroll from the glossy shops of Via Camerelle, and the dramatic panoramas of the Gardens of Augustus.
