Excursions

Please note excursions operate seasonally.

Amalfi Drive: The famous Amalfi Drive is considered one of the most beautiful coastal roads in Europe. It starts in the hills behind Piano di Sorrento and stretches all the way to Vietri sul Mare, a distance of some 50 kilometres. Our guided, scenic coach tour takes you very gently, in air-conditioned comfort, along this clifftop road.

The first stop is a point above Positano for a panoramic view of this picturesque village. Travelling through the villages of Praiano, Furore and Conca dei Marini, we continue on to Amalfi itself, with free time for a wander through its narrow cobbled streets.

The cathedral dedicated to St Andrew is just one of the main sights in this pretty seaside resort. Winding again uphill, you visit the tranquil, hilltop village of Ravello, home of the Villa Rufolo. Here, Richard Wagner wrote 'The Parsifal' and every year, in his memory, the village of Ravello hosts a musical concert in the spectacular Rufolo gardens. The view from Ravello's picture-postcard piazza is truly breathtaking.

The coach excursion stops for free time in Amalfi and Ravello only and not in Positano. Please note the return journey by coach is via an alternative route and not the coastal road, as per the Select Amalfi. This is due to traffic restrictions for larger forms of transport.

Optional extras/entrance fees: Amalfi Cathedral 3 Euros. Amalfi Boat Trip 10 Euros. Villa Rufolo 5 Euros. Ravello Church 2 Euros.

Operates Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays (without lunch), plus Thursdays (with lunch) (subject to minimum numbers)
Duration: Full Day

Continuing south, we reach the site of Paestum, where one of the best preserved Greek Temples in Italy is located - The Temple of Neptune (5th century BC). Our local guide gives a walking tour of the site, including the three temples, the ruins of the city itself and a very interesting museum, housing the treasures found in the excavations of the area. The land here is very flat and fertile, which is why the local farmers choose to graze the renowned 'bufala' cattle - the area around Paestum is reputed to produce the best Mozzarella di Bufala in Italy.

Capri by night is a totally different creature, once the last public ferry to Sorrento leaves at 7pm, the island itself comes alive. For our journey back to Sorrento, we charter a private boat - the perfect end to a lovely evening!

Ischia (Spa or Gardens): We cross the bay by hydrofoil to Ischia, the largest island in the Bay of Naples, also known as the 'Green Isle'. A volcanic island (the volcano is now extinct); the vegetation is very rich and varied. The island is a famous health resort due to its many natural thermal spas (terme) and also offers superb, golden, sandy beaches - the only beaches of their kind in the Bay of Naples. Take your swimsuit, towels and bathing caps (yes, bathing caps!) with you if you wish to experience the health-giving properties of the thermal waters as the tour includes a stop at one of the spas. If you prefer to stay dry, you may choose instead to visit the famous Mortella Gardens, a botanical garden of Eden created by Lord & Lady Walton in the early 1900s.

It includes a guided coach tour of the city, carefully planned to include the most well known sights - the huge Vittorio Emmanuel Monument, the Forum, Piazza Venezia and many more famous buildings and monuments that adorn the city. The main highlight is, of course, St Peter's and the Vatican City, where you will have free time to visit the breathtaking Basilica and the Vatican Museums.
