Lake Como Hotels & Holidays
About Lake Como
Lake Como, the third largest of the north Italian Lakes and the deepest in Europe, has rugged beauty, soaring mountain peaks, gentle foothills and lakeside towns that have attracted scores of composers, artists and poets from Verdi and Liszt to Shelley and Byron. We offer a range of elegant Lake Como hotels ranging from three star to five star.
The busiest village of the lake, Bellagio is known as 'The Pearl of Lake Lario' and is a place with narrow cobbled stairways full of shops and delights. In addition to the lovely views, coffee shops and eateries, there are a number of churches, villas and parks to visit; Villa Serbelloni, Villa Melzi, the 12th century basilica of San Giacomo, and the Romanesque churches of San Giorgio and San Martino.
The village of Cadenabbia is situated on a wide plateau overlooking the lake on the western shore, about 50 metres above lake level. It faces the peninsula of Bellagio with the Grigna and Grignetta mountains in the background and hugs the road from the city of Como at the south of Lake towards Switzerland situated just north of the Lake. For a long time Cadenabbia has been a favoured place of the British and a large community live here.
The village is based around a little horseshoe bay looking across to the village of Bellagio. It has a lovely promenade dotted with restaurants and cafés where you can stop for refreshment whilst admiring the stunning views. Not far from the village you will find Azzano, where Benito Mussolini and his mistress Claretta Petacci were shot dead in 1945.
Lenno has a fabulous market on a Tuesday morning, probably the best on the lake, selling local produce as well as souvenirs leather and clothes. There is also an unspoilt pebble beach for swimming and an artificial sandy beach at Lido di Lenno.
A bustling village with a charming little square and a nice lakefront promenade. The square has many gelaterias, shops and cafés where there is a good chance you could spot George Clooney drinking coffee, as he owns one of the many luxurious villas close by.
Located on the western shores of Lake Como, this town is in the area of Colonno/ Griante/ Cadenabbia and the island of Comacina, and has a particularly mild climate. The area is known as the Azalea Riviera because it has so many Azaleas and Rhododendrons, Camelias and Magnolias and Tremezzo is where you can find the famed Villa Carlotta with it's beautiful gardens and grounds.
Varenna is a characteristic little village set on a promontory at the foot of the magnificent Esino Valley on the eastern shores of Lake Como. In 1169, the inhabitants of the Isola Comacina sought refuge in Varenna, bringing with them their trade and architectural traditions and giving the place a new name: Insula Nova.
The Vezio Castle, attributed to Queen Theolinda stands above Varenna and can be reached on foot, passing the hamlets of Perledo and Esino Lario. This castle is the most interesting fortress on the lake, with an embattled tower surrounded by walls and open towers probably dating back to the 1300s.
