Varenna is a characteristic little village set on a promontory at the foot of the magnificent Esino Valley on the eastern shores of Lake Como. In 1169, the inhabitants of the Isola Comacina sought refuge in Varenna, bringing with them their trade and architectural traditions and giving the place a new name; Insula Nova.

The Vezio Castle, attributed to Queen Theolinda, stands above Varenna and can be reached on foot, passing the hamlets of Perledo and Esino Lario. This castle is the most interesting fortress on the lake, with an embattled tower surrounded by walls and open towers probably dating back to the 1300s.

The scenery is beautiful, exactly like it looks in the pictures with mountains and towns dotted around the lake, a very picturesque area of Italy. It's a great lake to explore, you can jump on a ferry that can take you across the lake easily to the different little towns and villages or take a walking traill around the lake. You can stay for ten nights and have something different to do every day.
