Calabria is Italy’s best kept secret. Tucked away in the south of Italy, it is a hidden, untouched region that invites you to experience the Italian way of life. Here are some of our favourite things about Calabria for you to enjoy on your next Italian adventure.

Wander around Tropea

Tropea is a coastal gem in the south of Italy. With stunning natural beauty and rich history, this little town is captivating and vibrant. Nestled on a cliff overlooking the turquoise waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea, Tropea is blessed with panoramic views as far as the eye can see. Wander around the narrow streets and soak up the fresh, clean air. There’s so much history in the streets and heading off the main road gives you the opportunity to learn about the culture and meet the local people. Be sure to try the famous sweet red onions, and nduja, a spicy spreadable salami that will make your tastebuds come alive.

Take a trip to the Aeolian Islands

From the coast of Calabria, you can see the Aeolian Islands in the distance. This mesmerising archipelago is made up of seven islands – Lipari, Vulcano, Salina, Panarea, Stromboli, Filicudi and Alicudi. A haven for nature lovers, the Aeolian Islands boast a diverse range of landscapes, perfect for those seeking adventure. Stromboli is an active volcano known for its regular eruptions while Lipari is the largest and most vibrant with a buzzing port area and ancient archaeological treasures. The Aeolian Islands offer a wealth of wonders and can easily be reached in a couple of hours from the mainland.

Reggio Calabria

The largest city in Calabria, Reggio Calabria is famous for the Riace Bronzes which are ancient Greek statues paying homage to the area’s cultural past. Known for its historical significance, Reggio Calabria invites you to stroll through its charming streets and squares that are lined with elegant churches and palaces. Embrace the beauty of the coast with a walk along the Lungomare Falcomatà, one of the most stunning waterfront promenades in all of Europe offering gorgeous views across the sea and Sicilian coast.
