On arrival at Verona airport, collect your hire car and prepare for a beautiful drive, traversing several idyllic towns that hug the shores of eastern Lake Garda until you reach your first destination of Bolzano.

Map of Day 2: Bolzano

Nestled in amongst a cascading mountain range, Bolzano is a multi-pronged attack on the senses with its culture, energy and combination of Germanic and Italian heritage showcased in the form of its cuisine. Today, get your walking shoes on and head out into the historical heart of the town. An information centre, providing free walking tour maps can be located in the town but irrespective of this, getting lost in the medieval streets and becoming immersed in the pristine landscape is all part of the fun. Before returning to your accommodation, try an old local favourite dish of German speck ham - which is widely regarded as an equal in importance to Italian pasta and pizza.

Today, why not head over to the scenic grape growing region of Merano. Exploring the wineries is a must with key establishments such as Kellerei Meran Burggrafler spearheading the pack, set in a hillside with stunning views across the region. With Merano's verdant landscape and mild climate, this allows wines like La Grein and Santa Maddalena to grow, each of which bear the DOC seal of quality.

Time now to venture south of Bolzano and into the dense vast forest surrounding the Montiggler Seen lakes. Divided into two, the 'Piccolo' (small) and 'Grande' (large) Montiggler Seen lakes are a hidden treasure, acting as a blessing in the warm summer months with the picturesque backdrop of the mountains and cool water. The west side of the lake houses a public pool, a restaurant and a stretch of bathing platforms, ideal for those wanting to relax by the lakeside or on the lush green lawn. This is the perfect place to make yourself a fresh panini, pour a glass of wine, throw out a blanket, lie back and let the scenery speak for itself.

Situated high in the hills on the outskirts of Bolzano and hidden amongst a plethora of vineyards, sits the Castel Roncolo. This medieval fortification was built on a rocky spur and features many impressive frescoes within. Perhaps after treating yourself to a generous helping of ravioli or risotto in one of the many traditional trattorie on Bolzano's Walther Square, you will summon the energy to make the 30 minute ascent to the castle - if not, then resort to plan B and take the car, either way it's well worth a visit.

Points of Interest

Before bidding farewell to the Dolomites, be sure to grab a slice of the well-loved apple strudel for the drive down to Verona. Once you've entered the city of the 'star crossed lovers', dropped off the car and checked into your hotel, it will be just in time for your next dose of exploring. Take a stroll to the Piazza Bra, the focal point of Verona, enhanced by its very own Roman Amphitheatre. There are many cafes and restaurants lining the cobbled perimeter of the square, allowing you the opportunity to pull up a seat and watch the world go by.

Given the abundance of historical points of interest scattered across Verona, it would be a good idea to get your well-worn walking shoes on early today and take a leisurely stroll through the time shaped streets of this Italian city, before stopping at the entrance to Juliet's house. Juliet's Balcony is the main attraction here but the rather alluring love notes plastered over the passageway leading to the small courtyard creates a more symbolic embodiment of the famous Shakespeare story, adding character to the scene and bringing it to life.

When you've finished contemplating writing your own love note on the wall, make like a vespa and head towards the ancient site of Ponte Scaligero, an impressive fortress built on the banks of the River Adige. With all your energy spent, its now time for dinner and there's no better place to go than the Piazza delle Erbe, offering up numerous pizzeria's and trattoria's for you to indulge in.
