Points of Interest

Map of Day 4: Siena

Siena, with its maze of narrow streets, characterful bars and restaurants, and lively history, is a true highlight of Tuscany. You’ll start your guided tour in the fan-shaped Piazza del Campo, a beautiful medieval square that’s famous for the Palio di Siena horse race that takes place here twice a year. Our guide will explain the traditions behind this event and the fascinating rivalries of the city’s contrade (parishes) that compete against eachother in the race.

After, we’ll stop at a local bar for a cappuccino and some typical biscuits from Siena. It’s then onto the Duomo, one of the most stunning cathedrals in Italy. You’ll get to step inside the impressive building (entrance is included) where you can admire the magnificent 56 marble mosaic tiles that cover the entire floor of the Duomo, completed by around 40 artists between the 14th - 16th centuries.

After lunch at leisure in the city, we’ll head back to the hotel where you can enjoy an afternoon by the pool.

In the morning, we will stop in the medieval hill town of Montepulciano, famed for its excellent Vino Nobile wine. After some free time for lunch, we head to Pienza, a picturesque small town which has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. There are many viewpoints throughout this small town from where you can take in the sprawling countryside views, and it’s dotted with family-run shops selling Pienza’s local speciality: pecorino romano – a parmesan-like cheese hugely popular within the region. We’ve included a tasting of this delicious cheese.

Standing at 60 metres tall and leaning at around a 10 degree angle, the structure is considered to be a remarkable example of architecture in medieval Europe, and the quirky attraction draws thousands of visitors every year.

After a stroll through the Old Town passing by Piazza dei Cavalieri, we depart for Lucca, a true gem in Tuscany and birthplace of the famous composer Giacomo Puccini. You’ll enjoy lunch at leisure here with plenty of free time to explore the small city’s narrow streets that open suddenly to reveal churches, squares and even a Roman amphitheatre.
