The famous cathedral in Siena, Cattedrale di Santa Maria, was originally designed and completed between 1215 - 1263. Filled with works by Michelangelo, Pisano, Donatello and Pinturicchio this beautiful building is as impressive from the inside as from its exterior. Constructed from white and greenish- black marble (the colours of Siena), the Cathedral is set in the form of a Latin cross complete with dome and bell tower, and sits in its own piazza just above Piazza del Campo.

The magnificent 56 marble mosaic tiles that cover the entire floor of the Duomo were completed by around 40 artists between the 14th - 16th century. Protected for most of the year under cover bar a small area, the floor is revealed in its entirety for 6-10 weeks a year usually during the month of September. Other highlights include Bernini's gilded ceiling, the Piccolomini Library and crypt.

Opening hours: 1st March to 2nd November 10:30am - 7pm,  3rd November to 28th February 10:30am - 5:30pm.

Prices: €4.00 includes entrance to the Cathedral and Piccolomini's Library.
