If you are interested in ancient architecture then look no further than the small intimate settlement of Erice. Off-set from the Baroque coastal city of Trapani and nestled high up in the mountains, in amongst the low level clouds, Erice quietly sits harbouring a rich sanctified history. The town is scattered in fortified Norman castles that peek over the thicket that envelops them. The highlight considered by many is the Castle of Venus, rested eloquently on top of Eryx Hill, this spot has aged gracefully and provides impressive views of Trapani, the Egadi Islands and on a clear day, you may even see the outline of Tunisia. Top tip – be sure to try some of Erice’s famous pastries.
