- Admire Lipari Town’s pastel-coloured seafront
- See Vulcano’s smoking crater
- Visit the world-famous hot springs and mud baths
Lipari is known as the gateway to the Aeolian Islands, it is the largest within the group and boasts a quintessential Italian seafront with endearing restaurants and little olive groves
Vulcano is as dramatic as islands come, with several volcanic caldera and its sulphurous fumes rising high into the sky, it’s certainly a place you won’t forget.
Leave Taormina early in the morning and set sail for Lipari, a lively scene with picturesque streets and a pretty harbour. The main town is comprised of elegant townhouses, charming terraces and of course the Castello, a striking castle that perches on its historic walls high above the water. Much like its nearby neighbours the island is volcanic but hasn’t erupted for over 1,400 years so if you’re after something a little more active, then the next stop is exactly that.
Vulcano is just a short jump, skip and hop from Lipari but they can feel worlds apart. As you can gather from the name, this is a Volcanic Island, but is actually one of the only active craters in the Mediterranean. During your time there you can head up to the crater to admire the view or head down to the black beaches at the Porto di Ponente. Stroll over to the bubbling thermal mud baths for a truly unique experience or just get some great photos of the area if that’s not quite your idea of relaxation.
