You’ll find the miniature medieval town of Castelbuono squirreled away in the mountains of the Parco delle Madonie. Its cobbled streets and frescoed churches wind up a hillside to a grand 14th-century castle, once the home of one of Sicily’s most powerful noble families and now the location of the Civic Museum.

Charming restaurants and cafes dot the town, turning out traditional Sicilian dishes and fruity granita (sorbet). Keep an eye out for ice-cream and cakes laced with manna – a naturally sweet tree sap found only in the area around Castelbuono.

The town is the perfect jumping-off point for exploring the Madonie Mountains, with walking trails leading up into the forest-cloaked hills and winding mountain roads leading to historic villages. It’s in easy reach of the coast, too, with Cefalu’s golden sandy beaches just 45 minutes’ drive away.

The closest airport to Castelbuono is Palermo (PMO). Direct flights from London Gatwick take approximately 2 hours 50 minutes.

When to go

Thanks to its southerly location, Sicily enjoys mild temperatures all year round. Spring and autumn are both lovely times to visit, with temperatures in the high teens and early 20s (although up in the hills and on the slopes of Mount Etna it can be significantly cooler). In summer, you can expect temperatures in the high 20s – perfect for spending time on the island's beautiful beaches.
