Take the opportunity to visit two islands in the Mediterranean in one, on a day out to the unique French island of Corsica. As Sardinia’s nearest neighbour this island is in some ways very similar and in other worlds apart. Taking the scenic coastal road to the most northern point of Sardinia, Santa Teresa di Gallura we take a short 50-minute journey by ferry to the magnificent town of Bonifacio. The town is known as one of the gems of the Mediterranean and a popular stop for those island- hopping by yacht. Just the approach to the port is enough to make the trip worthwhile. The craggy old town clings to the sheer cliff face as if it is about to topple into the sea and yet the arrival into the harbour oozes finesse and glamour with the luxury yachts, chic bars and boutiques. It is undoubtedly the most characteristic coastal town on the island.
We skip the steep walk up to the old citadel by taking the small tourist train from the port. The town is reach in history due to its strategic position 70 metres above the limestone cliffs, accessible only by its fjord style harbour. Here your guide will give a guided visit of the main sites in Bonifacio from the main churches, the Mariner’s cemetery and the cobbled streets of the centre as you walk in Napoleon’s footsteps and learn about the history and culture. You will have plenty of free time to discover the town at your own pace and visit any sites which are of interest. There is the famous king of Aragon staircase, an escape route to the sea from invaders which is built into the limestone rock and accessible for a small fee and for the very adventurous there is the secret underground tunnels where ammunition was stored and leads out to an opening in the cliff face with magnificent views, beware of the 168 steps uphill on the way back.
