You'll find the city of Como right at the southern end of Lake Como. Set within 12th-century walls, the historic heart of the city is an atmospheric sprawl, complete with grand medieval architecture, fashion-conscious shoppers and a cosmopolitan ambience. As a prime silk manufacturer, Como is a great place to pick up beautifully made silk clothing, plus there are plenty of quaint shops throughout the city selling everything from antiques to fine wines. Como's history is a proud talking point of residents, so make sure you spend some time exploring the sights, including Como Cathedral, which features a 245-foot-high cupola and magnificent 16th-century tapestries.
When it comes to getting out and about, Como is ideally situated for seeing more of the surrounding area. Take the hair-raising funicular more than 1,600 feet up to the viewpoint town of Brunate, make the 30-minute drive to Lake Lugano, or just explore the many pretty towns scattered along the lake’s shore.
