Sorrento might have less of a tourist draw than its famous neighbours, but for us, this is a blessing. There's no better place to enjoy exciting explorations of landmarks such as Naples, the ancient city of Pompeii, and ever glamorous Capri. Hop on a ferry, jump on a train, even hire a car to explore the region and we guarantee you’ll be rewarded with stupendous views from sea to sky. The town is easily walkable so do make sure that you leave time during your stay to discover this gem of a place.
The city is famous in its own right - it was an obligatory stop on the Grand Tours of the 19th century, Charles Dickens’ famously fell in love with the “vineyards, olive trees, gardens of oranges and lemons, orchards, heaped-up rocks, green gorges in the hills”, and Sophia Loren, possibly Italy’s most attractive export, filmed her 1955 classic Scandal in Sorrento here.
Very little has changed in Sorrento since Italy's golden age of dolce vita glamour. Families still gather around tables laden with delicious Sorrentine food, couples still stroll the narrow, paved streets and the delightful little shops still make artisanal goods as they have done for years. While a holiday here is not exactly a step back in time, a healthy respect for the town’s heritage permeates the atmosphere wherever you go.
