Set in the enormous Cilento National Park, Palinuro is a peaceful town best known for its Blue Flag beaches and coastal grottos. Surrounded by fragrant pine forest and looking out over the Tyrrhenian Sea, this sleepy seaside settlement is a refreshingly authentic holiday choice that few but the locals know about. Explore the rural surroundings on foot by hiking along the coastline and into the unspoilt landscape behind the town, or discover one of the area’s stunning sea caves.

Back in the town, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to cuisine. Options here range from chilled-out beach bars to rustic trattorie serving fresh pizzas. Make sure you try the local anchovy pasta – it’s as popular as it is delicious. Finish your meal with a lemon meringue pie for the classic Cilento finale. If you fancy getting out and about, ferries run along the coast, sometimes as far as Naples via Capri. If you’re travelling by car then we highly recommend making the drive to Paestum to see some of the remarkable ancient Greek temples preserved there.

Flight Information

The closest airport to Cilento is Naples (NAP), which is approximately 3 hours from Cilento. Direct flights to Naples airport (NAP) are available from Birmingham, Bristol, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London Gatwick, London Luton, London Stansted, Manchester and Newcastle and take approximately 2 hours 45 minutes.

When to go

Cilento is a summer destination and most hotels are open between May and October. July and August can become quite crowded, especially on the coast so the best time to go to avoid this is June and September, although the weather stays relatively warm for the whole season.

Visa Information

At the current time, British citizens do not require a visa to visit Italy.

Tipping

Whilst tipping isn’t embedded into Italian culture it is always appreciated as an acknowledgement of good service. Nowadays people generally round up a bill in a bar or cafe and leave 5-10% extra on a restaurant bill. Taxi bills are usually also rounded up.

On guided tours/excursions it is customary to leave a token of appreciation for the driver and guide.
