Capri Town is the first thing visitors see when they arrive on the island. From a deceptively small port, the town of Capri climbs upwards into the island’s scenic foothills. Its pretty terracotta houses and intricate whitewashed alleyways are picture-perfect, and you'll see them on many a postcard for sale in the island's souvenir shops.

The town first became known as a haven for the rich and famous during Roman times and is still a celebrity magnet today. At the heart of Capri lies the renowned Piazzetta – a flower-adorned square that looks out over the Mediterranean Sea. From this popular base, set at the top of the island’s funicular railway, visitors can immerse themselves in the maze of winding streets that makes up the heart of the town.

Just a few streets away is Via Camerelle, Capri’s fashion centre, with luxurious boutiques and sun-drenched cafes creating the perfect setting for a shopping spree. One of the island’s top attractions is just steps from this shopping idyll – the Gardens of Augustus. These beautiful botanical gardens have been established for more than 100 years and offer visitors perfumed pathways and awe-inspiring views over the famed Faraglioni rock formation.

Flight Information

The closest airport to Capri is Naples (NAP), which is approximately 2 hours 15 minutes from Capri via ferry (we recommend that flights into Naples arrive no later than 4pm and depart no earlier than 11.30am in order to catch the first/last ferry).

Direct flights to Naples airport (NAP) are available from Birmingham, Bristol, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London Gatwick, London Luton, London Stansted, Manchester and Newcastle and take approximately 2 hours 45 minutes.

When to go

Capri's season runs from April to October. Summer (June to August) is the busiest time for the island but even during these months the evenings are relatively quiet as most people are only visiting for the day. April, May, September and October are the best months to travel to avoid the worst of the crowds and still enjoy good weather and warm sea temperatures.

Visa Information

At the current time, British citizens do not require a visa to visit Italy.

Tipping

Whilst tipping isn’t embedded into Italian culture it is always appreciated as an acknowledgement of good service. Nowadays people generally round up a bill in a bar or cafe and leave 5-10% extra on a restaurant bill. Taxi bills are usually also rounded up.

On guided tours/excursions it is customary to leave a token of appreciation for the driver and guide.

Introduction to languages

The official language of Italy is Italian. English is widely spoken too, so getting by is easy.

The isle of Capri’s cuisine draws on many inspirations, including the Spanish, French, Romans and Greeks, with the most famous local dish known as the insalata caprese, which gets its name from the island itself. This simple salad of tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and basil – which draws on the colours of the Italian flag – is combined with olive oil and salt to produce a hugely popular starter.

Capri Specialities Unsurprisingly, fresh fish dominates the menu, with the simplicities of squid and anchovies a must, as well as the equally simple yet more sophisticated dish of stuffed calamari. Fresh vegetables are also a given in every restaurant, but you won’t walk past a single outlet without the smell of the ever popular calamari, which can be enjoyed as you twist and turn through the surrounding pathways.

Capri Specialities Simple yet tasty foods require less simple wines, and holidays in Capri include an almost infinite list of tantalising bottles. Capri Rosso (red wine) is always a popular choice, yet the most notable option is undeniably one of the traditional Lacryma Christi wines; an iconic bottle produced on the steep slopes of Italy’s very own Mount Vesuvius.
