Tour Description

  • 8 days
  • selfguided
  • tour

Look just north of Sicily on the map and you’ll spot the Aeolian Islands, a volcanic archipelago sprinkled across the Tyrrhenian Sea. Most visitors will tend to visit just one of the islands (or stay on one and day-trip to others), but the best way to get a true sense of each island is by staying over for a couple of nights.

This island-hopping itinerary lets you stay on three islands, Vulcano, Lipari and Salina. Each has something different to offer: Vulcano has a laid-back style with mud baths and hot springs; Lipari has a lovely port town and lots of smaller villages and beaches to explore; and Salina is lush and green, with forest hiking trails and vineyards producing delicious Malvasia wine.

Points of Interest

Map of Days 2-3: Vulcano

Today, you’ll head north to the port of Milazzo to catch your ferry across to the islands. First stop: Vulcano. As its name suggests, the main attraction here is the huge crater, which you can hike up for panoramic views across the whole archipelago.

Back on the coast, you’ll find black-sand beaches, plus naturally heated mud baths and thermal springs – perfect for relaxing in after a walk up the Gran Cratere.

Days 4-5: Lipari

Map of Days 4-5: Lipari

After a couple of days on Vulcano, you’ll hop on the ferry over to neighbouring Lipari, the biggest of the Aeolian Islands.

You’ll have a couple of days to explore the island. The action centres around its lively main town, where you’ll find a charming walled old quarter, a fantastic archaeological museum and plenty of cafes and seafood restaurants. Walking trails roll out from the town along the coast, leading explorers to viewpoints and little beaches.

Days 6-7: Salina

Map of Days 6-7: Salina

Your final island of the trip is Salina. It’s the greenest of the Aeolian Islands, with lush forests, sloping vineyards and hilltop towns reminiscent of Sicily 30 years ago.

Discover the island’s pastel-painted fishing villages and hike the trails through volcanic valleys and pine forests, or take a boat over to chic Panarea or fiery Stromboli.
