Tour Description

  • 8 days
  • suggested
  • multi-centres

This tour knits together Bologna, Modena and Parma – the three foodie capitals of Italy. It’s not all about historic balsamic vinegar tastings or Michelin star-decorated restaurants, either – these cities are the birthplace of Verdi, Ferrari and Pavarotti, so opera houses, museums and universities stack the streets, too.

Points of Interest

Map of Day 1-3: Bologna

Check in to your Bologna hotel. Most of them are central, so you’ll be in easy reach of Piazza Maggiore and its ring of palaces and churches. San Petronio Basilica is best for art – its alcoves and domes are filled with frescoes and portraits. For a bird’s-eye view, aim for one of the many medieval towers that keep an eye on the tight-knit streets.
Remember to grab a bowl of spaghetti Bolognese before you move on – known as tagliatelle al ragu by locals.

Day 4-5: Modena

Map of Day 4-5: Modena

Modena is the next stop. A private transfer will get you to your chosen hotel in an hour – or you could hop on the fast train from Bologna Centrale station.
Modena might be a little city, but it’s got plenty of claims to fame. Museo Casa Enzo Ferrari is a love letter to one of Italy’s most well-known sons, Enzo Ferrari, while Casa Museo Luciana Pavarotti is a behind-the-scenes snapshot of the legendary opera tenor.
The balsamic vinegar of Modena is also on show. Head to one of the many vinegaries (such as Acetaia Comunale), where you can pay a few euros for a history lesson and tasting of Modena’s most famous food export.

Day 6-8: Parma

Map of Day 6-8: Parma

Transfer to Parma – one of the lesser-visited cities in the Emilia-Romagna region. The ancient city centre clings to the Parma River. You could wander around the art galleries of the Palazzo della Pilotta, picnic in the palatial Ducale Park, or peer up at Parma Cathedral.
Parma also sits in the “Food Valley”, so make sure to try Parma ham and Parmesan cheese while you’re there. Fresh pasta (especially tortelli) is also a speciality.
You can fly home on day eight – or extend your stay with a few nights on the sandy Adriatic Coast or in mountainous San Marino.

Extend Your Stay

Take in more of the destination or relax in a spa at the end of your trip by adding few extra nights stay in one of these hand picked hotels.
