Rome & Florence Holidays

This twin-centre city-break is an exhaustive tour of 3,000 years of culture, ranging from Roman remains to the splendour of the Renaissance. It would take gargantuan strength (and several holidays!) to tackle everything these combined cities have to offer, but we have provided a run down of must-see sights.

When in Rome, you must visit the Vatican, the world’s greatest museum, and much more than a religious landmark, with the world’s largest church, and the glory of the Sistine Chapel. As the seat of the Empire, Rome’s ancient sites are unrivalled; the Pantheon, Colosseum, and the Forum are epic monuments to ancient culture, and if you have time, head out of the city centre to the Ostica Antica, for impressive ruins of ancient Rome’s main port city. Art lovers will adore Rome’s countless museums and galleries, such as the Galleria Borghese, a true pleasure palace filled with Graeco roman, Renaissance and Baroque art by the greatest masters. The Museo Nazionale Romano showcases the world’s finest ancient art, sculpture and mosaics whereas the Museo Capitolini’s masterpieces include Greek sculptures and Caravaggio’s paintings. Many epic artworks are hidden inside some of the city’s many churches; Santa Maria del Popolo is decorated with rich displays of Renaissance and Baroque art and San Clemente is a patchwork of ancient and modern religious architecture, frescoes, mosaics and relics. If all this sounds exhausting, you can soak up just as much of Rome’s cultured atmosphere by wandering through the streets and enjoying the acres of impressive architecture.

Florence’s tiny streets are bewildering, packed with a 5th of the world’s art treasures. Make a beeline for the majestic Duomo, a triple threat with Giotto’s Campanile and the Baptistry - its doors demonstrate the artistic ideas leading to the Renaissance. Many of the city’s historic buildings are now also excellent museums; the Bargello, built in 1255 is the oldest seat of Government surviving in Florence, and houses Renaissance sculpture and the Uffizi Gallery, the oldest gallery in the world is home to masterpieces of the Renaissance. Like Rome, Florence’s churches are full of hidden treasures; the 13th century Convent San Marco is decorated with frescoes by Fra Angelico, the Gothic Church Santa Croce has tombs of famous renaissance men Galileo and Michelangelo and the Santa Maria Novella contains some of the most important works of art in Florence. For a spot of culture under the Tuscan sun, discover the Piazza della Signoria, a picturesque outdoor sculpture Gallery or wander across the Ponte Vecchio, the oldest bridge in Florence.
