Palermo & Vulcano Holidays

Pair Palermo and Vulcano on a twin-centre holiday for a unique spa retreat and a city break with an island twist.

Sicily has a history of visitors that came, saw and decided to set up camp on this island paradise, and its diverse history of inhabitants is vibrantly expressed in the capital Palermo. Visit the Museo Archeologico Regionale for important Phoenician, Greek and Roman artworks, or the Galleria Regionale della Sicilia, housed in the grand Palazzo Abatellis for outstanding works of art from Flemish masters. The Gothic, Baroque, Norman-Arab, Byzantine, and Romanesque architecture on show in Palermo’s streets is dazzling (if a little overwhelming!), so recoup your energy alfresco with a foccacia, a hot bread roll filled with meat, cheese or onions, the Sicilian answer to fast food.

The Aeolian Islands were named after Aeolis, the God of Wind, and you are guaranteed to be blown away by the godlike views from Vulcan’s mountain peaks. Volcanic activity has ceased on the island, but the thermal springs are still active, and spa addicts flock to slather on the volcanic mud, said to soothe skin and back problems. If the idea makes your skin crawl, then swim amongst the waterside caves, explore secluded villages or languish on the darkened sands of Vulcan’s excellent beaches.
