Collect your car from Pisa airport and head out on the open road through rural Tuscan countryside to your chosen hotel, villa or apartment near the famous medieval town of San Gimignano. This city of the Renaissance boasts more historic sights than you could ever visit in one day, so plan ahead to maximise your time in the city.  Top of the list is surely the jaw-dropping duomo – one of the largest cathedrals in the world, and home to a magnificent fresco by Michelangelo. Florence is also home to many world-class museums and art galleries, including the Academy where you can see Michelangelo's David, and the famed Uffizi – home to hundreds of Renaissance masterpieces.. For the shopaholics, the city is also rich in open-air markets and chic boutiques, with the best being next to the Basilica of San Lorenzo.

During your last few days in Italy, we recommend you travel among some of the most beautiful beach resorts along this stretch of coastline. First up is Viareggio – a thriving beach resort, packed with historic architecture and fronted by a gleaming beach. Close by is neighbour Forte Dei Marmi – an unmistakably upmarket resort, home to celebrities like Andrea Boccelli. With a vibrant watersports scene, plenty of chic seaside cafes and lots of upmarket shopping, this lively beach resort is one of the most popular in Tuscany.

For those wanting to see more of Italy, the Ligurian towns of Rapallo and Santa Margherita are just over an hour away by car. These beautiful destinations are packed with charm, and also provide easy motorboat access to the pastel-shaded harbour town of Portofino – known around the world for its celebrity clientele and its particularly beautiful setting. Finish off with a slow return journey back to your accommodation for one last night.
