Map of Days 2-4: Tuscany Coast

Famed for its long sandy shores lapped by the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Tuscany Coast is one of Italy’s most beautiful. First stop along the coast is the vibrant town of Viareggio, boasting elegant architecture, fantastic shopping and great nightlife – especially during its colourful carnival that takes place in February featuring papier mâché floats and masked parades.

Next-door to Viareggio lies Forte dei Marmi, abundant in exclusive boutiques and lots of great restaurants. The town takes its name from the fortress located in the main square, and its stylish streets draw celebrity holidaymakers annually. Be sure to spend some time relaxing at the beach, as this is one of the coast’s finest. Those seeking to go a little further afield can head for the spectacular Ligurian towns of Rapallo and Santa Margherita, where you can catch a motorboat to the renowned fishing village of Portofino and relax in style by the pastel-shaded harbour. Finish the day with a slow drive back to your hotel or villa for the last night in Tuscany.

Points of Interest

Today you will be leaving the Tuscan Coast for Venice – Italy’s inimitable ‘floating city’. Drive across the golden Italian countryside to Marco Polo International Airport (approx. 4 hours), drop off your car and take a water taxi to your centrally located hotel. We recommend booking a gondola ride for your first afternoon, passing romantically faded houses and beneath time-worn bridges as you explore the city’s vast labyrinth of waterways, before finishing with a meal alongside the Grand Canal as the sun sets.

Points of Interest

During your first full day in Venice, we suggest pre-booking a walking tour of Venice, where you’ll take in the delights of the Golden Basilica, St Mark’s Clock Tower, and Doge's Palace. The tour finishes with a stroll down the bustling Mercerie, the city's golden mile of shopping. Those wishing to look deeper into Venetian history can pre-book an extended tour to include entrance into the Golden Basilica and/ or the Doge's Palace the same day. Alternatively, the pre-bookable Islands Tour gives you an insight into some of the most intriguing islands in the archipelago. Watch traditional glass blowing in Murano, wander past the brightly coloured fisherman's houses of Burano and take in the haunting atmosphere of the unforgettable Torcello Island – once the main centre of Venice.
