With spectacular views and thousands of years worth of history, Taormina’s Greek Amphitheatre is one of Sicily’s must-visit attractions. Built in the 3rd century BC, this architectural wonder is one of the largest remaining in Italy, with a spectatorship during ancient times of up to 5,000. Like many such theatres, Taormina’s saw transformation under Roman rule, changing from a classical Greek-style theatre to a more sophisticated Roman equivalent.

During these times, the theatre was used to stage gladiatorial fights rather than the meetings and plays of the earlier Greek period. The immense structure sadly fell into disrepair centuries later, but has now been reopened and showcases rock and classical music performances, as well as hosting the famous Taormina Film Festival. The mesmerising ocean backdrop makes this one of the most impressive stages in all of Italy.

Opening hours: The theatre is open daily from 9am – 7pm, although closes to tourists early on show days. Events are generally scheduled between June and August and generally require pre-booking.

Price: Prices for shows vary. Standard entry is at a cost of approximately €10 per person.
