  • Enjoy spectacular views from Mount Etna
  • Ascend to either 1,900 or 2,900 metres
  • Chance to swim at the beautiful Alcantara Gorge

This full-day excursion is the perfect opportunity to enjoy one of Sicily’s most iconic landmarks: Mount Etna.

On your way to the volcano, you’ll stop off at Alcantara Gorge, a stunning and unspoilt lava-stone canyon carved by the Alcantara River. You’ll have 90 minutes of free time here; you can follow one of the walking trails at the top, or take a lift down to the bottom of the gorge, where you can have a paddle or even a swim.

Your next stop is Mount Etna, Europe’s biggest active volcano. As you ascend to a height of 1,900 metres, your guide will fill you in on the volcano’s geology and history. Once you arrive, you’ll be able to enjoy a spectacular outlook across Sicily and the Ionian Sea. For even more dramatic views, it’s possible to go up to 2,900 metres. You can book this on the day of the excursion (approximately €65), but if you know in advance that you’d like to go up to 2,900 metres, you can save money by asking for the Premium Mount Etna excursion when you book. Bring sturdy shoes with you, as you’ll need to walk the last half-hour or so to reach the crater.

We say: “If you’re able, I’d definitely recommend going to 2,900 metres for the full Mount Etna experience. It’s chilly but worth it! And remember to take a hand towel so you can have a paddle at the gorge.” Melissa Chisholm, Italy Expert

Prices: From £38 per person from Giardina Naxos, Taormina & Taormina Mare. (£80 for the Premium Mount Etna excursion)

Operates: Wednesdays

Duration: Full day

Start time: 8:00am approx

Included: Transport, hotel pick up and drop off (from central locations).
