Syracuse boasts a rich Greek history and culture and is the birth place of Archimedes, the ancient Greek mathematician. Explore the archaeological wonders of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, notably the historic centre of Ortygia, and the Greek Theatre dedicated to the Goddess Athena.

Thanks to an exclusive entrance to the archaeological park, it’s just a 200 metres stroll to the Temple of Concordia, the nearest of the ten temples dedicated to the Greek Gods. Explore the many historical attractions of this site, before lunching at the hotel and then heading to the archaeological museum, which showcases a wide range of exhibits from the area including statues and ceramics.

Today you will begin with a memorable drive across the breadth of the island, to the captivating seaside town of Cefalu (approx. 2 hours drive). Check in to your fantastic hotel before heading to the town's medieval district to see the glorious mosaics and monumental twin towers of the Duomo, and explore the restaurant-filled winding lanes surrounding it.

Get up early and head through the city centre to La Rocca – the enormous rock that rises above the town. As you climb, the views get better and better, culminating with the ancient ruins of the Temple of Diana and stunning panoramas from the very top. Explore the surroundings to discover a rich ancient Greek heritage, before heading back down to the atmospheric streets of the old town.

Today is a day to relax, soaking up the sunshine on the beautiful sandy beach. There’s a lot to do around this area, ranging from boat rentals to excellent seaside dining, but it’s also just as easy to do nothing but lounge in the sun. Today you will be driving north east, towards the beautiful town of Taormina, set high on the mountainside of the Monte Tauro (approx. 2 hours drive). Check in to one of our extensive range of hotels before heading to Corso Umberto – Taormina’s main street, packed with lively gelaterias and local boutiques. As the sun sets over distant Mount Etna, you can finish the day by dining in style at one of the many great restaurants scattered around the town.

There’s a lot more to see and do, so you’ll want to get out and about to explore the best that Sicily has to offer. First stop is Taormina’s ancient Teatro Greco theatre, where theatrical and operatic shows are still held today. Then it’s down the hillside to the peaceful pebble beach of Isola Bella: a picturesque beachfront surrounded by lush greenery, and connected to the atmospheric Isola Bella itself.

No stay in Sicily would be complete without a visit to the highest active volcano in Europe – Mount Etna. Pre-book the Mount Etna and Alcantara Gorges excursion for the best experience, taking you first to the lava-formed valley of Alcantara Gorge, and then onto Mount Etna itself. Ascending to 2000 metres, you’ll be able to admire breathtaking views, plus there’s an option to climb to 2900 metres via cable car and off road minibus to reach the main crater.

The closest airport to Syracuse is Catania (CTA), which is about 1 hour from Syracuse. Direct flights to Catania are available from Birmingham, London Gatwick, London Luton and Manchester and take approximately 3 hours.

Direct flights from London Standsted are also available to Comiso (CIY), which is about 1 hour 30 mins away and take approximately 3 hours 15 mins.
