Tour Description

  • 7 days
  • selfguided
  • tour

This six-night South Tyrolean wine and Alpine pasture trail follows the renowned South Tyrol wine route. You can expect to explore wine-growing villages, apple orchards and Italy’s most stunning mountain region. With over 800 castles and palaces in the region, there’s plenty of opportunity to uncover their history, as well as sampling local delicacies. We have suggested time in South Tyrol’s main towns, Bolzano and Merano, as their picturesque streets were made for exploring. This itinerary can be a little hilly, but the panoramic views from the majority of the pathways make the hilly terrain well worth it.

Difficulty level: 2/4 A good basic level of fitness is required for this tour, with walking times of around four to six hours per day. You'll walk on well-maintained paths on Waalwegen (old irrigation systems) and in sections of forest roads and asphalted paths.

Whats Included:

•    6-nights accommodation on a bed and breakfast basis in 3* and 4* hotels
•    Luggage transfer between hotels
•    Welcome meeting with a local representative
•    Well-planned out routes with detailed travel documents and maps
•    Access to a service hotline during your tour
•    Cable car ascent fare in Jenesien

Map of Day 1: UK – Merano

Today, you'll arrive in the town of Merano. Here, Italy meets Austria in architecture and your first explorations of this area will be of the town itself. Visit the thermal baths, with its 25 pools, saunas and steam baths. Wander the pretty promenade and the cobbled streets, lined with shops and restaurants.

Day 2: Merano – Nals

After a hearty breakfast, today you make your way along the path of Marlinger Waalweg. This path, stretching 12 kilometres, offers stunning views across Merano and the Etsch Valley on its way to Bozeno. Built more than 250 years ago, it's one of South Tyrol’s most famous paths. From here, enjoy forest walks to Tisens, an area renowned for its sweet chestnuts.

South Tyrol is home to over 800 castles and mansions, and this afternoon your route will take you to three of them. Head to Nals, and Stachelburg, Schwanburg and Parsberg castles. Parsberg Castle is particularly fairytale-like.

Walking time approx. 5.5 hours. Distance 19km. Elevation + 540m / - 550m.

Day 3: Nals - Bolzano

Today your castle and palace fix continues. Much of today’s route will be on a high-altitude path, with amazing views across the countryside to distant castles. You will then reach Eppan, the largest wine-growing region in South Tyrol. Stop here and sample a glass of the Slyvaner white wine.

Jump on a short bus ride to Bolzano, South Tyrol’s capital city. Spend the rest of the day exploring its medieval streets, edged with shops and restaurants. Bolzano’s Waltherplatz square is the best place to rest your legs with a cappuccino (or another glass of wine if you fancy).

Walking time approx. 4 hours. Distance 11km. Elevation + 470m / - 400m.

Day 4: Bolzano – Molten

This morning, take the cable car to Jenesien, which faces what some people would say is South Tyrol’s prettiest side. Your first view will be of Lake Kalterer. Its lush surrounding landscape reflects beautifully onto the lake, making it very green in colour. You will also view castles and palaces as you continue along this route. The landscape here changes slightly as you hit the Dolomites – expect dramatic, jagged rock faces. Continue walking and you'll reach meadows peppered with horses and cattle. Your end destination today is the village of Molten.

Walking time approx. 4.5 hours. Distance 11km. Elevation + 470m / - 420m.

Day 5 – Circular walk: Molten

The idyllic village of Molten is worthy of a day's exploration, so today you'll complete a circular route around the area. Perched 1,100 metres above the countryside, the surrounding scenery is stunning - picture meadows covered in flowers, larch forests and alpine fields.

Walking time approx. 4 hours. Distance 14km. Elevation + 600m / - 890m.

Your walking tour of South Tyrol is coming to an end. Firstly though, enjoy your final leg across more of South Tyrol’s alpine fields. While in the area, make sure you try their home-made dumpling specialities – perfect for refuelling. Then make your way along the last high-altitude path to the famous Trauttmannsdorff Castle. Once the holiday home of Empress Sissi, it's surrounded by stunning gardens. This evening will be your last in Merano. If you haven’t already, find yourself an apple pie!

Walking time approx. 5 hours. Distance 13km. Elevation +580m / - 440m.
