Arrive in Cagliari and pick up your car at the airport. It’s a 45-minute drive along South Sardinia’s picturesque, unspoilt coast to Pula, one of the island’s oldest towns with a charming town centre and clutch of authentic restaurants.

Must see: Pula is right next door to the Nora Archaeological Site, one of the most important sites in Sardinia with thousands of years of significant discoveries.

Day 2: Nora

The Roman town of Nora is around five kilometres from Pula, and is home to a feast of archaeological remains in a jaw-dropping coastal location.

Must see: Nora’s Roman amphitheatre is one of the most impressive in Sardinia, and still hosts a variety of music shows and festivals in summer.

South Sardinia’s unspoilt coast is interspersed with glorious sandy beaches, and driving is the best way to see them. Just 15 minutes’ drive along from Nora is beach town Santa Margherita di Pula, one
of the most scenic spots on the coast.

Must see: There’s no doubt about it; Santa Margherita di Pula is all about the beach. It really is something special – a stretch of Caribbean-style powdery sand and pale blue waters.

Day 4: Cagliari - Palermo

After a relaxing beach day, it’s time to head back to the city. You can get back to Cagliari in under an hour, bidding farewell to those fabulous sea views. Before you catch the ferry to Palermo (alternatively you can fly to Catania), spend the rest of the day enjoying this charming cosmopolitan city.

Must see: The Cathedral of Santa Maria. This spectacular 13th-century cathedral is the icon of Cagliari and is filled with interesting artworks.

Arrive in Palermo and spend the day enjoying Sicily’s thriving capital before you start your selfdrive. It’s a vibrant city filled with architectural treasures, and exciting dining and nightlife.

Must see: The Catacombs of the Capuchins are a fascinating ancient cemetery set beneath Palermo’s medieval streets. A chilling but essential sight.

Day 6: Cefalu

It’s around 1 hour 30 minutes along the coast to Cefalu, a coastal city with mix of cultural cool and great beaches, with plenty of places to dine, drink and soak up the sea views.

Must see: Lungomare, Cefalu’s main beach. It’s a lovely sandy stretch with a pretty waterfront promenade and plenty of cafes – perfect for making the most of Sicily’s famous sunshine.

Enjoy Sicily’s scenic coastal roads for a few hours to Taormina, a stunning medieval city poised high above the sea. Its historic centre is a treasure trove of tiny shops, trattorie and medieval houses, with
an impressive 3rd-century Greek amphitheatre.

Must see: Taormina’s little patch of beach leads out to a tiny but beautiful island, Isola Bella, nicknamed the ‘Pearl of the Ionian Sea’.

Day 8: Agrigento - Palermo

Around three hours through the heart of Sicily, Agrigento is a perfect example of Italy’s medieval roots, with an atmospheric centre and beautiful open piazzas. From there, it’s around two hours back to Palermo.

Must see: The Valley of the Temples is one of Sicily’s most famous sites, a UNESCO-honoured archaeological site with impossibly well preserved Greek temples dating back to 430 BC.
